Everyone who has been a Mississippi State fan for awhile knows that we just do not start well. We just don't. And against a team as good as Alabama, you simply cannot afford to do anything but start strong. Saturday night against the Tide, MSU did not do that. After a quick score by Alabama to go up 7-0, MSU put together a drive of its own, only to fail inside the red zone, having a field goal blocked. That field goal might as well have been the symbol for how the entire evening would go, as MSU saw mistake after mistake plague them en route to a 38-7 loss to the Crimson Tide of Alabama.
But do not take anything away from Alabama. The TIde proved tonight why there are far and away the best team in college football, as A.J. McCarron had a fantastic night, finishing 16 of 23 for 208 yards and 2 TDs. McCarron was deadly accurate, making the most out of every throw he had, and on top of the freshman RB T.J. Yeldon had an outstanding game, finishing with 84 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.
Tyler Russell and the offense did not play that bad, in reality, it was just that when it came time to capitalize, they were unable to do so. Take for instance in the second half, when State drove from our own 3 down to Alabama's 2, and then threw a pick on 3rd down in the endzone. It was just that kind of a night.
There will be more numbers and analysis tomorrow from Robbie, but for right now, all you need to know is this: Alabama is that good. And this Mississippi State team simply is just not there yet. And by there, I mean on that upper echelon of the college football level. There is still a good bit to play for this season, so there's no reason to hang your heads, State fans. Tip your hat to Alabama, a team that will most likely win a second consecutive NC soon, and move on knowing you have 4 big games left on the schedule, games that could still help us have a great season. Seriously, it's one loss. Do not let it define your season. There is still too much to play for.
The sun will come up tomorrow. We will still put our pants on one leg at a time. It's going to be okay, and so forth. And keep your heads up State players, you still have a lot left to play for.
