A hectic second weekend of play saw SEC Eastern Division teams continue to struggle, while the SEC's Western teams continued off to great starts on the season. Here's a brief and incomplete look at some of the best performances from over the weekend, as well as an updated standings for the SEC after two weeks of play.
Offensive Performers of the Week
Alex Detz, Mississippi State - Detz, the JUCO newcomer who is filling in for the injured Wes Rea, held strong in Rea's stead this past weekend, going 5-for-13 in the four game weekend tournament with 5 RBIs total.
L.B. Dantzler, South Carolina - [from SECSports.com]: Dantzler was the top hitter for the Gamecocks in the Albany series as he hit .692 (9-for-13) with a .733 on-base percentage and a phenomenal 1.308 slugging percentage for the weekend, with 10 RBIs, two doubles and two homeruns.
Mark Laird, LSU - The talented freshman racked up a solid weekend in LSU's 2-1 weekend, going 8-for-13 over the three game stretch.
Pitchers of the Week
Philip Pfiefer, Vanderbilt - [from SECSports.com]: Started two games last week, picking up wins in both appearances. In 12.2 innings, gave up one earned run on six hits and struck out 16. Punched out a career-best 10 batters in win at Belmont to become the first Commodores' pitcher since 2011 to record at least 10 strikeouts, striking out at least one batter in every inning. Started his second career game and earned his second win in five days with six innings of work against Monmouth on Sunday. Did not allow a hit in his final four innings and retired 14 of the final 15 batters.
There are many more great performances from over the weekend, but I was unable to locate them in time for this post. If I find anymore I will add them in the comments. If you come across one as well, make sure to let us know in the comments too.
