Baseball starts on Friday at Dudy Noble and everyone should show up and the Left Field Lounge needs to be rocking on DAY 1. Why? According to the Mississippi State baseball twitter page, ESPN is going to have 10 people on opening day in the left Field lounge writing an article or doing a documentary(It wasn't specific but any day ESPN is at a college baseball stadium should be noteworthy). Honestly I think they could have waited, but I am glad that ESPN will show the pageantry of the Left Field Lounge(I just hope they stay for Saturday).
Now lets get to the preseason hype. Most of the polls have us in the top ten in good company with teams like South Carolina, LSU, and Vanderbilt from the SEC. A little surprised to see teams like Virginia, Oregon State, and Indiana(really?) ranked ahead of us. Personally I will just take the fact the we are in the top ten and ignore the questionable teams ahead of us(remember Arkansas was preseason number 1 last year). Most people expect us to finish no less than 4th in the SEC behind Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and LSU. And I say that is pretty good company to be with.
Now lets get to our goals. I think the biggest goal is to get back to Omaha but lets take a step back and focus on the regular season. Do we want to win the SEC Regular Season? This isn't the biggest goal to me in the regular season. It would just be an added bonus if you ask me. I think we should strive to finish ahead LSU(I mean winning the series at Alex Box) which would probably give us the division title. Honestly as long as we finish no less than 4th in the final SEC standings then that will be fine(finishing in the top 4 gives you a 1 day bye in the SEC Tournament). Do we want to win the SEC Tournament? I think that would be an added bonus as well. I think we should at least make the semifinals. And finally postseason expectations? Do enough in the regular season to get a national seed(that would involve hosting a super regional). Honestly this should be our number 1 goal in the regular season. Do enough to get the selection committee to select us as a national seed would be huge.
Then I guess getting back to Omaha is the goal of all goals. Getting back there will get us our number 1 goal. A national championship. Idc if we dont win the sec, or the sec tournament, or get a national seed for that matter if we trade that in for a national championship. You make think that that is not possible but just remember that a lot of people did not see MSU playing UCLA(I hate this team, cant wait to kill them in 2016 at Dodger Stadium along with their twin USC) as a possibility. We were that close to winning a nc, but I think to hold up that number 2 trophy felt great. Sure it didn't feel good to the players at the time because they lost, but that means they were the number 2 team in the nation which is better than any other bulldog team in history(not saying they were the best but they were my favorite). So you have to think that the only thing that they could do that would be better would be to win a national championship. The first one that the State of Mississippi would win in the SEC(unless you consider Ole Miss's fake nc's in football). Which brings me to an article I will later write about the egg bowl...
Honestly the future not only looks bright this year but for the future of MSU Baseball. We are under the shadow of programs like LSU(dormant before the 80's) and South Carolina(Ray Turner did great not sure about much else about them). TO say the least we shocked ESPN and everybody when there were 90% of the 27,000 plus in Omaha for the cws finals cheering for MSU over UCLA. While I don't think we have to win a national championship this year, I do think being a national seed wouldn't hurt so that we would build a consistent program. And once we do that we will have a national championship in no time. Lets just face our mild goals: finish 4th or better in the SEC Regular season, make the semifinals in the SEC Tournament, be a national seed, Make the cws. I am not asking to be the number 1 overall seed(yet). I just want to host a super regional is all.
Leave a comment for what you think our goals are or how our team will do. Honestly I think we will make the cws again. But lets face it, as long as we make the Regional, we wont be completely disappointing(did you know that in 2012 Arizona won the CWS and didn't make a regional the following year in 2013(hey we play at Arizona this year)).
