Mississippi State freshman Mackenzie Toler tied her career high with two hits, and Alison Owen put together a gem in the circle, but their efforts came up short as the No. 12 Georgia Bulldogs, powered by a fifth inning home run by Alex Hugo, knocked off Mississippi State 1-0 Friday at Jack Turner Stadium.
Owen (10-5) and Georgia pitcher Chelsea Wilkerson (13-2) both tossed complete games for their squads. Wilkerson struck out 14 while only allowing three hits, and Owen struck out five while giving up five hits.
Mississippi State (21-6, 1-3) had the first scoring opportunity of the game when Jessica Offutt hit a one-out single and advanced on an error with two outs, but Wilkerson picked up a strikeout to end the third inning threat.
In the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs picked up a leadoff single from Toler, but Mississippi State left her stranded at third. On the second pitch of the bottom of the fifth, Hugo put an Owen offering just inside the left field foul pole to put Georgia (23-2, 1-0) ahead 1-0.
With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Toler struck again for Mississippi State with a double, but Wilkerson picked up a strikeout to end the game.
Due to the strong threat of inclement weather Sunday, the squads will now play a doubleheader Saturday to close out their series. Game two of the series will start at 1 pm CT with the final game of the series estimated to begin at 3:30 CT.
