Why It's Frustrating...

Look, I am highly frustrated with our staff. However, this isn't due to non-issues or pure emotion. In how the game is played today and teams are slotted for the post season, teams can't rely on just taking 2 out of three games. Will that get you into the post season yes. Will it get you hosting duties for the first 2/3rds of the post season...no it won't.

Do I think a sign of success is just making it to the post season...sure if your a Non-power 5 team or a Div IAA team. If your a member of a power 5 conference your a middling team. Elite teams host regionals and super regionals on a continual basis. And yes that means I want a HC and staff who will get Miss St back to Elite status and keep us there for years to come. Given the last 3 seasons I don't feel Cohen can do that. HCs of elite teams manage every game to win the contest, they don't inculcate a mindset of 2 out of 3 is the preferred solution. They coach to win every game and want players with that same mindset. They make moves that are logical. And lets be honest, no one was happy that Marrero was given that last at bat. In a situation like that, you put in a batter who can put pressure on the LSU pitcher and D. You put in someone like Cody Brown who can hit and also hit the long ball. Putting Brown in would have put pressure on a new LSU pitcher. LSU was going through pitchers as much as we were and we were a hit away from changing the game. Putting in Holland for a guy who was .500 on the day was not smart...same with having Mangum who was killing the ball, bunt.

Cohen is an ok coach, and I guess for most that is hunky dorrie. However, when our team with him at the helm goes up against an elite coach and team...it shows and we don't win on a regular basis. 2013 we had a group of players who wanted it badly and overcame alot of really poor management decisions, until the championship series and Cohen got pantsed coaching wise. For me being ok or descent, isn't good enough and neither is simply getting into the post season. Even with having won 5 of 6 SEC series, we are currently 2nd in the West and tied for 4th with UK in the SEC standings. A&M is now in a better position to host a regional and super regional than we are. I want us to get dual hosting duties, so for that to happen we need to sweep 3 of 4 of our final series. We also need A&M to lose their series to Vandy and SC and that is a purely numbers issue...as simply winning the last 4 series isn't good enough to get around A&M record wise.

This scenario really bothers me, that instead of being in the drivers seat we are now very dependent on other teams to help us out. Cohen has done an ok job...but we are not doing all the things we need to in order to win the SEC title. Not one season that he has coached has that really seemed to be a team goal. The only goal seems to be the post season. Elite programs on the other hand have goals to win their conference and go to the CWS.

So no I don't want Cohen gone for no good reason. There are plenty of good reasons to get a new HC, but that is only if you are interested in having an elite baseball program in Starkville. If your interested in seeing Miss St win the SEC regular season title. If your a fan who would rather play the first 2 rounds of the playoffs at home. If your not interested in of the above, I can see why it's easier to ignore the problems with the HC we have.
