NCAA Round 1 Open Thread - Day 2
Wow, that was an exciting opening day of the NCAA. If you are like me, you were glued to the TV hoping that Villanova would pull out the win over Robert Morris. How many of you saw Ohio upsetting a terrible looking Georgetown team, or UTEP laying an egg in the second half against Butler?
As for my bracket, I only lost 2 of my Sweet Sixteen teams, so I am still in pretty good shape. Vandy and Georgetown hurt me because I had them going to the Sweet Sixteen before loosing out.
Today gives us key matchups for most everyone's bracket: Sienna v. Purdue, Temple v. Cornell, and Pitt v. Oakland. Those are the games that everyone seems to be taking changes on.
Same as yesterday, you can keep up with the scores and watch the games On Demand via this handy pop-up player.

NIT Round 2 News and Notes
The Bulldogs are set to tip-off against the Tar Heels on Saturday in the 2nd Round of the NIT. State is looking forward to the national exposure that playing a team like North Carolina can bring, even if it is in the NIT. Stansbury has already talked this week about why it is hard for Mississippi State to schedule opponents like UNC, especially for home games:
"You can't pick up the phone and call (Carolina) to ask for a home-and-home with them," Stansbury said. "That's the same reason we can't schedule Duke, UCLA or Kansas. Those teams don't come to Starkville.
It is essential that the atmosphere at The Hump be as electric as it has ever been. Students are out for Spring Break this week, so that combined with the late start time left quite a few empty seats for the Round 1 game against Jackson State. Tickets sales already look good for the Round 2 matchup. Most students will be returning to campus and alumni will be able to make a day trip out of the game. UNC will probably have some fans in tow as well. Associate AD Mike Richey tweeted yesterday that the only NIT tickets available for Round 2 were student tix and a handful of others.
Barry Stewart Will Play
Barry Stewart took himself out of the JSU game. Apparently, he was wearing some new shoes that did not fit well and he rolled his ankle or something like that. Tests have come back negative for a fracture so he is cleared to practice this week and play on Saturday. We will need his defensive skills against the 'Heels for sure.
NIT Bracketology
I have the Bulldogs going all the way in the NIT. In their bracket, State will defeat UNC, welcome UAB to The Hump and send them packing back to Birmingham. Then they will take care of UConn at MSG in the semifinals and play Illinois for the title.
How do you see the NIT breaking down?
Also, I have Kansas v. Syracuse and Kentucky v. Villanova for my final four, with Kansas and Kentucky playing for the title and Kentucky winning out.

"I really like where we’re going to be on the mound," Cohen said this morning. "We have a very high skill level of kid. "It’s just showing up in bits and pieces, like I really thought it would be. As we move along, kids like Ben Bracewell, kids like Kendall Graveman, kids like Caleb Reed, (Chad) Girodo, Luke Bole — we just keep getting these little snippets of where the kids are going to be."

NIT Round 1: State Shakes Off The Rust, Defeats Tigers
After a slow start Monday night, the Bulldogs picked up the pace in the second half and sent Jackson State back down the road to enjoy the rest of their spring break.
Jarvis Varnado came away with another double-double, his 18th on the season and his 33rd for the career. He led the team with 21 points and had 11 rebounds. He only had 3 blocks, but that was to be expected against JSU who tends to play a small, fast set of players and doesn't really have an inside game for him to match up against.
Dee Bost had 18 points, six assists, and a wake up shot to the groin. About 5 minutes into the second half, JSU's Phillip Williams delivered a low blow on Bost and was subsequently ejected. After that, Bost went on a 7-point run and the Bulldogs never looked back.
Despite the loss, Garrison Johnson showed why he was the SWAC player of the year, finishing the night with 32 points.
The Bulldogs came out really slow tonight. You could tell they were still pretty much drained from the grueling schedule of the SEC Tournament in Nashville - a fact that Joe Dean, Jr. made sure to remind us of throughout the night.
State's second round opponent will be the North Carolina Tar Heels. UNC is playing in the NIT just a year after winning the NCAA Tournament. They have never visited Starkville or The Hump but hold a shut-out record over the Bulldogs of 4-0. The Tar Heels defeated William & Mary 80-72 in their first round game.
We will have a preview of that game coming up later in the week. Tip-off is scheduled for 11am at The Hump. Hopefully many of the students will make it back to town early and really pump up the atmosphere for this game.
