The first weekend of another college baseball season is in the books, and overall, it was a successful one for SEC teams. There were a few surprises here and there, but when series completed on Sunday, 12 of the league's 14 teams had taken series' over the first weekend of play. Let's take a quick look at some of the performers of the weekend, and how each teams stands after week 1.
Offensive Performers of the Week
Zack Powers, Florida - The redshirt sophomore had a monster day at the plate Sunday against Duke, going 2-for-3 with 2 grand-slam home runs and nine (!) RBI's on the day. Powers was 3-6 on the weekend.
J.T. Riddle, Kentucky - Riddle started off the season white hot for the Wildcats, going 9-for-11 with three doubles, one triple, and four RBI's in Kentucky's weekend opening wins against UNC-Asheville and Niagara. Riddle was 6-for-6 in the Wildcats 20-3 dismantling of Niagara.
Mitch Slauter, Mississippi State - The rock-solid catcher for MSU only played two games this weekend, but Slauter had a great start at the plate in the opening weekend, going 6-for-9 on the weekend with a home run and four RBI's.
Mikey White, Alabama - White was the 2012 Alabama POY from the Birmingham area, and was expected to come in and be an early contributor to the Alabama team. He got off to a good start in that effort this past weekend, going 6-for-11 with four RBI's in Alabama's three game sweep of VMI to open the season. White could be a strong candidate for newcomer of the year in the SEC this season. Keep an eye out for him.
Pitchers of the Week
Bobby Wahl, Ole Miss - Stop me if you've heard this before, but the talented Ole Miss junior had a great showing in his first start of the year against #14 TCU. Wahl turned in a three hit, eight strikeout performance in 6.1 innings of work while allowing no runs in Ole Miss' 1-0 season opening win.
Aaron Nola, LSU - Like Wahl, Nola is another one you could've easily expected a great start out of before the season started. And Nola didn't disappoint, turning in two hit, nine strikeout performance in 6.2 innings of work to beat Maryland 1-0 in the Tigers season opener Friday night.
Jerad Grundy, Kentucky - Like Riddle, Grundy was a big part of the Wildcats 20-3 win over Niagara this weekend. Grundy did his work on the other side of things, however, turning in a nine strikeout, four hit performance giving up two unearned runs and earning a win for #11 Kentucky.
