The Mississippi State Bulldogs took on the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles Sunday Night at the Southern Mississippi Track and Field/ Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs came out victorious with the 1-0 win on Sunday and finished the weekend 2-0 after defeating South Alabama Friday Night 2-1 in Mobile.

Southern Mississippi set an attendance record with 950 people on Sunday as Mississippi State fans packed the stands and had people in standing room only to watch the two instate foes. The crowd was into the game early and made an impact on critical moments throughout the ballgame. The Southern Miss fans became vocal in the last 20 minutes with a student led chant with a drum. But the drum was no match for the cowbell.

Mississippi State and Southern Mississippi were scoreless at halftime. However the Bulldogs once again had more corner kicks then their opponent in the first half, and they also out shot their opponent 8-2.

Ariana Holmes was a factor all evening with her long throw ins and long kicks. Early in the 2nd half, her long throw in sets up a Mississippi State goal as Southern Miss scores an own goal from Holmes’ field goal.

Makayla Waldner was able to get two shots on goal coming off the bench and Mallory Eubanks added two shots of her own.

Crowd favorite and Laurel Mississippi native, Carly Mauldin, had a shot of her own, and Hattiesburg native, Kayleigh Henry, added a shot as well.

Mississippi State Goalkeeper Courtney Tompkins had 6 saves in the game, and held Southern Mississippi to a shutout.

Mississippi State will return home next weekend. The Bulldogs will take on Arkansas on Friday Night at 7 pm at home for their first Southeastern Conference game. Mississippi State will also face Louisiana Lafayette on Sunday for Senior Day at 1 pm. Every Mississippi State Home Game is free for MSU fans attending Saturday’s South Carolina Football Game.

Arkansas is currently 5-1 with a win over then number 2 Duke and a loss to George Washington. UL Lafayette is currently 3-3 with losses to Ole Miss, Nicholls State and Southern Miss.

Mississippi State improves to 4-2 on the year with 3 road wins. This is the first time MSU has gone undefeated and won 3 games in road non conference play since 2009.
