Four Thoughts on Mississippi State’s Close Win over UMass

What a weird, frustrating game

NCAA Football: Massachusetts at Mississippi State Matt Bush-USA TODAY Sports

This was the perfect trap game for Mississippi State and the Bulldogs survived

Holy crap. Just. Well. Holy crap. This game sucked and it really felt like Mississippi State was caught in a trap. When you blow out Kentucky and Texas A&M in back to back weeks and you have your sights set on #2 Alabama, it can be incredibly easy to overlook an opponent like UMass.

The Minutemen were 2-6 coming in to Saturday’s match up, and it was certainly a weird time to schedule an out of conference game. What was likely intended to be a break for the Bulldogs turned into anything but. And given that MSU just handed UMass their largest loss of the season, I’m somewhat happy with the results.

I’m still kinda mad. But, you know, I’m somewhat happy too. In that “I got punched in the face but you broke three of your fingers and only gave me a minor bruise above my right eye” sort of way. There’s really nothing to be happy about in that moment. You’ll likely have a pretty bad headache because of it. But, when you step away from it and look at the larger picture, you can be sort of relieved. Mostly because the other party screwed up.

Fans are blaming black out uniforms because, well, reasons

This is a thing that is happening. This is a thing that objectively should not be happening if we’re being rational.

And, for what it’s worth, here’s this:

Those wins include a 35-28 upset over then ranked #4 Texas A&M Aggies in 2016 and a 42-16 blow out over Kentucky back in 2015. So, yeah, the uniforms are fine. Everything is fine. Mississippi State is winning games in black uniforms.

UMass might be better than their record proves, similar to how Kentucky and A&M were worse than their record at the time proved

UMass is not good. Any team that is 2-7 is actually bad. Very, very bad. But, UMass has had some interesting games this season. Prior to this past weekend, The Minutemen hadn’t lost a game by more than 10 points. They came close to upsetting a bad Tennessee team at a time that Tennessee still had something to play for.

The Minutemen also average just shy of 300 passing yards per game and tally over 440 total yards of offense per game. They can move on a lot of teams and they’ve played a lot of close games. It took them a while to get a win, and they were finally able to do so in back to back weeks before they came to Starkville. They thought they had put everything together. And, in a way, they almost did. It just wasn’t enough to take down MSU.

This guy needs to learn to control his temper

I’ve let my anger get the best of my on occasion. Well, on multiple occasions. But, I don’t think I’ve ever let it get me into a compromising situation quite like this guy did, when he tried to fight his own teammates.

HE TRIED TO FIGHT HIS OWN TEAMMATES!!

WHO DOES THAT?!?!

lol well this guy does

His coach should probably not argue with Dan Mullen too, but, well, I’m biased.
