Mississippi State concluded its opening weekend with an extra inning affair with the Georgia State Panthers. The Bulldogs went to 12 innings this afternoon with the visiting Panthers, but ultimately could not produce enough runs to get the victory.
Regan Green got the start for MSU today, and she performed well in her outing. Green threw 5.0 innings, surrendering only 1 run after facing 19 batters. She struck out 4 in her time in the circle.
Green was eventually pulled for Holly Ward, who made her first appearance of the season. Ward wound up throwing for 7.0 innings (enough for a complete game) where she would eventually give up 2 runs, only one was an earned run, however.
Mississippi State has struggled at the plate this weekend, and today was unfortunately no different. The Bulldogs got 6 hits on the day, and drew 4 walks, but only produced 1 run. 10 Bulldogs were left on base today.
Ward and Green gave Mississippi State a chance today, and the Bulldogs were able to get on base, but they need to find a way to get runners home. State certainly has the ability to win these games. If they can get more timely hits going forward, they should be able to string together some wins.
It’s still early in the season and the fantastic pitching should put MSU in positions to win all season. Though they struggled to score this weekend, it’s possible that trend may not continue all season.
The Bulldogs will be off the rest of the week before heading down to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge on Thursday. They’ll get a chance to bounce back against Fresno State, Cal State Fullerton, Texas Tech, and Florida Gulf Coast.
