The Mississippi St. Bulldogs have not had much luck in the kicking game the past few seasons. The fan base has collectively held its breath every time a kicker has run on the field to kick a field goal in recent memory.
True freshman Tucker Day is going to handle the responsibilities this season. He was an All-American as a punter, but has been practicing field goal kicking for at least this season.
In 2018, Day will likely return to full time punting duties because Logan Cooke will graduate, and it looks like the Bulldogs have a great option at kicker for 2018. Current Bulldog commit Evan McPherson from Fort Payne, AL competed in July to earn one of the two spot in the Under Armour All -American Game to played in 2018. Here’s the footage of the competition.
Evan McPherson is the 7th rated kicker in the country according to the 247 Sports Composite Index. He breaks a trend by Mullen and his coaching staff to not offer kicker scholarships.
So maybe the Bulldog kicking woes are getting ready to come to an end. If Tucker Day can be a stopgap for the Bulldogs in 2017 as the team’s field goal kicker, then Evan McPherson can be a great option for the Bulldogs in 2018. As always is the case, nothing is guaranteed for a commitment until they sign a Letter of Intent, but it makes me feel a little bit better knowing the Bulldogs have at least a verbal commitment from a kicker who has the leg to knock some through the uprights.
