Good morning, Stark Vegas! It’s been a few days since the last one, so there’s plenty of State-related news to get to, both good and bad.
Let’s get started.
Volleyball falls to Auburn and Georgia
Good news: Volleyball kept it close against Auburn! Bad news: They still lost 3-2. They also fell to Georgia 3-1 in the Volleydawgs’ final match of the season.
Men’s basketball gets back on track
After falling to Arizona State, Ben Howland’s Bulldogs defeated St. Mary’s. Tyson Carter and Quinndary Weatherspoon both led the team with 12 points. They’re back home tonight as they host Alcorn State.
FOOTBALL WON THE EGG BOWL
Nick Fitzgerald had 228 all-purpose yards and 3 total touchdowns in State’s beatdown of Ole Miss. Kylin Hill also added 108 rushing yards and a touchdown. As a Redskins fan, this Egg Bowl saved my Thanksgiving.
Women’s basketball keeps rolling
After beating Furman 106-41 behind Teira McCowan’s 24 points, the Lady Bulldogs rolled over Jackson State 105-38. That’s four straight games where Vic Schaefer’s team put 100+ points. They play Arkansas Little Rock next, but then they play at Texas in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
Let’s get into some national news.
Mac Brown back to UNC
Former UNC football head coach Larry Fedora was let go this past weekend, firing up rumors of who the Tar Heels would get. Reports are pointing to former Texas head coach Mac Brown making a return to Chapel Hill, where he was the head coach from 1988-1997. Let’s just say, this will either be a good hire or a horrendously bad one. There’s no middle ground.
Texas Tech lets go of Kliff Kingsbury
The hottest offensive coordinator prospect is on the market. Kingsbury is widely liked by Red Raider fans and without question has a great offensive mind, but his faults on the defensive side and inability to lift Texas Tech to the Big 12’s elite ultimately led to his dismissal. He’ll find a place to get back on his feet, and with Alabama’s offensive coordinator being rumored for a few head coaching jobs, some lines have been drawn. I’d be terrified of Kliff going to Tuscaloosa.
Duke lost!
In the Maui Invitational Championship game, Gonzaga took down the seemingly invincible Blue Devils 89-87. I think it’s good that Duke won’t have the “Will they go undefeated?” question around them all season long. It was annoying when ESPN ran that with Kentucky, and it’d be annoying now. Alas, we don’t have to worry about that.
For those returning to campus like me, grind through these few weeks and study hard for finals. You got this!
Have a good day and Hail State!
