Mississippi State Softball Falls to Cal State Fullerton in Final Game in California

In a game that started at 10:15 pm central time, Mississippi State’s softball team was matched up with a Cal State Fullerton squad that took advantage of every little mistake that the Bulldogs made. And given that this was the second game of a doubleheader, and the fifth game in three days for MSU, a few more errors than normal happened to be made.

Cassady Knudsen threw a complete game for the Bulldogs, striking out 11 and only allowing 1 hit and issuing 2 walks. However, a grand total of 5 errors by Mississippi State came back to bite them and enabled Cal State Fullerton to sneak 4 runs across the plate.

It wasn’t just fielding where MSU ran out of gas. The Bulldogs struggled at the plate after performing well all weekend, striking out 8 times and only putting a total of 3 hits together, their second lowest hit total of the season.

This certainly wasn’t the way that the Bulldogs wanted to end their trip out to California, but it is an understandable ending. And despite stumbling to end the weekend, the Bulldogs came away with several key wins over the past couple of days. After dropping a game to #15 Arizona State 3-1, the Bulldogs took down #23 Nebraska by run ruling them 9-0, came back to beat #16 Oklahoma State 9-4, and then also beating San Jose State 6-4.

On the weekend Mississippi State went 3-2 (2-1 against ranked opponents) and is now 12-3 on the season. The Bulldogs are coming back home to host the Bulldog Slamboree in Nusz Park.
