Head coach Vic Schaefer and the Bulldogs are at it again, as they made a clear statement at home against Kentucky. Though Mississippi State is a defense first team, there was plenty of scoring in the 86-71 victory. In addition, the Bulldogs out rebounded the Wildcats 48-24. But it was the overall scoring show that put the basketball world on notice.

It started with senior Anriel Howard who led the team with 21 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block. Howard has become one of the game’s most lethal scoring threats. She is fearless and ready for the big moment. Look for Howard’s number to continue to be called in the most crucial moments in game’s to come.

Chloe Bibby, a crucial piece on both ends of the floor has also looked more comfortable as a starter. She posted 18 points and seven rebounds, ultimately serving as the perfect compliment to Howard throughout. Bibby, is not afraid to crash the boards, as she has also been a crucial weapon for coach Schaefer.

But perhaps the story of the game, and even the whole season was senior guard Jordan Danberry. While she showed her prowess on the defensive end last season, Danberry has been an offensive spark thus far in 2018-19. Following a 29 point outing against Arkansas, she had 17 points, three rebounds, five assists, and a block. Danberry has become an all around player as a senior, who has also become one of the team’s primary faces and/or leaders.

Though they did not keep her completely in check, Mississippi State was able to contain Kentucky superstar Maci Morris. Morris, a lethal scorer, posted 20 points in 30 minutes. While Morris was able to gash the Bulldogs last year, Mississippi State had something to say as well. But given Schaefer’s defense first mentality, it was clear from the get go that Morris must be held to a minimum.

Overall, the Bulldogs made their point and showed out. Expect big things going forward in SEC play. With more monumental moments to come, look for Mississippi State to rally as an all-round team. Set to make another championship run, the Bulldogs are locked in and have their eyes on the ultimate goal.
