No. 6 Mississippi State runs past Tennessee 91-63

While it was a dogfight three quarters through, the Bulldogs put on an offensive clinic in the fourth, leading to a statement victory.

No. 6 Mississippi State faced a real test, as Tennessee gave the Bulldogs a run for their money. But then the fourth quarter happened and Mississippi State took advantage. The Bulldogs’ vets stepped up and shined in the spotlight. Now 22 - 1 and still undefeated in conference play at 10-0 a monumental statement was made yesterday.

It was the story of four upperclassman. Anriel Howard, Teaira McCowan, Jordan Danberry, and Jazzmun Holmes left it all on the floor. Having combined for 67 of the Bulldogs’ 91 points, all knew what was on the line.

Howard and McCowan have been a formidable duo all season long, as both posted double doubles. Howard recorded 16 points and 11 rebounds. McCowan added 24 points, 15 boards, and three blocks. While both were dominant in the paint, McCowan’s 10 of 13 makes from the line showed significant improvement.

Danberry and Holmes combined for 12 assists and three steals. In addition, the duo only had one turnover, another huge improvement. Danberry’s 20 points yet again shown her ability as a scorer, having earned them the hard way. Holmes filled the stat line with seven points, eight assists, and two steals.

Bre’Amber Scott and Andra Espinoza-Hunter also scored in double digits, Scott with 13 points and Espinoza-Hunter with 11. Each, still underclassman have shown that they are well beyond their years. Expect both to see the floor on Thursday.

Overall, this year’s squad showed its ability to overcome adversity. Head coach Vic Schaefer has a special group and they are in perfect position to make a run at the ultimate prize. Look for more dominance going forward.
