Given it was a home loss, this one stung that much more for Mississippi State. Now with two losses on their resume, the Bulldogs were exposed. Though Anriel Howard and Teaira McCowan filled the stat line, it was simply not enough.
The duo combined for a total of 33 points and 19 rebounds. That said, Mizzou star guard Sophie Cunningham could not be stopped. She was a headache all game long and had her way on both ends of the floor. Cunningham posted 24 points, six rebounds, three assists, and four steals.
However, Mississippi State did have only one more turnover than Mizzou, 18-17. But it was simply a matter of scoring from the Tigers. The Bulldogs’ defense did not show up and Mizzou took advantage. Expect head coach Vic Schaefer to make significant changes going forward.
As they did in the loss to Oregon, the Bulldogs will learn from this. Look for Mississippi State to make amends and take out their frustration against the Aggies on Sunday. The Bulldogs have the talent and depth to make a run, as this is just another learning curve en route to the main prize.
Mississippi State travels to College Station to take on Texas A&M Sunday at 1:00 P.M.
