AUBURN, Ala. — The Mississippi State men's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end Saturday evening, as the Bulldogs fell to the Auburn Tigers, 80-75, at Auburn Arena.
With the loss, MSU falls to 21-8 (9-7 SEC), while the Tigers improve to 20-9 (9-7 SEC).
The Tigers led start to finish as Auburn built up an 11-2 lead to start the game. However, with the score 18-9 with 10:54 to go in the first half, the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run to come within two points at 18-16.
Auburn built its lead back up to 11 points at 28-17 before the Bulldogs clawed their way back within six points at 31-25 after a layup by Reggie Perry. The Bulldogs trailed 33-25 heading into the locker rooms.
The second stanza was much like the first, as Auburn built a 19-point lead at 69-50 with 6:20 remaining in the game. The Bulldogs finally got things going and went on a 17-2 run to cut the Tigers’ lead to four points at 71-67.
A 3-pointer by Auburn's Bryce Brown at 1:09 made it 74-67 and put the nail in coffin, as the Bulldogs fell to Auburn, 80-75.
Quinndary Weatherspoon led the Bulldogs with a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds. Tyson Carter also proved to be a valuable asset as he added 21 points in the contest.
As a team, State out-rebounded Auburn 41-21. However, MSU turned the ball over 18 times and shot just 10-of-30 from beyond the arc
The Bulldogs will now travel to Knoxville, Tenn, to face the Tennessee Volunteers on Tuesday. Tip time is set for 8 p.m. CT at Thompson-Boling Arena. The game will be televised by the SEC Network.
