Mississippi State Football: What does JaVonta Payton bring to the 2020 offense?

A student of the game with a sky-high ceiling, Payton is sure to be a factor this fall.

While the Bulldogs will be more experienced, the speed of the offense is sure to be second to none, primarily due to Payton’s skillset.

At 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Payton is a lethal threat that perfectly fits into Leach led attack. Payton excels in the open field and can blaze by corners on the outside. Like fellow wideout Osirus Mitchell, he should see himself used in numerous packages.

In 2019 Payton posted caught nine balls for 147 yards in 13 games. Quarterback K.J. Costello will have a steady one-two punch in Payton and Mitchell. Expect Payton to be used in the slot as well.

While the talent is there, Payton’s game does have room to grow, as he has the perfect mentor in Leach. Payton will have to shine for the Bulldogs offense to be as formidable as advertised. There is no reason to believe he will come up short.

Hail State!
