PEARL, Miss. — The No. 5 Mississippi State baseball team is set to face Southern Miss on Wednesday at Trustmark Park. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
The Bulldogs (5-2, 0-0 SEC) are coming off a pair of walk-off wins over Tulane last weekend to claim their first series win of the season. Sophomore Luke Hancock’s grand slam on Saturday gave the Bulldogs a 9-5 win and senior Tanner Allen’s two-RBI single gave the Bulldogs a 5-4 win on Sunday.
MSU is batting .263 as a team with Hancock and Allen leading with .346 batting averages. Hancock leads the team with 10 RBIs, while Allen has recorded a team-high nine runs scored.
The Golden Eagles 4-3 (0-0 C-USA) are coming off a weekend series win over UConn. They won the first two games 6-5 and 7-6 before dropping the finale 10-7. Southern Miss managed just 19 hits in the three-game series, but 16 went for extra bases, including 10 doubles and six home runs.
Southern Miss is led by sophomore Christopher Sargent with a .320 batting average and 11 RBIs. Freshman Reed Tremble is batting .227 with eight RBIs. The pitching staff has recorded 91 strikeouts in 60 innings to go along with a .249 batting average against and a 4.50 ERA.
Wednesday’s meeting will be the 126th on the diamond. MSU owns an 83-42 edge in the series, including two straight wins.
