I went into last night's game with an uneasy feeling. Louisiana-Lafayette seemed to have awakened offensively after their 1-0 loss to Jackson State on Friday, and I just felt like State might be walking head-first into a buzz saw. That proved to be true as the Ragin' Cajuns shellacked MSU 14-8 last night in a game that wasn't even that close. State did make it somewhat interesting with four late runs, but the win was long sewn up by then
The great thing about last night though is that the Cajuns' win didn't mean defeat for MSU; it meant that the two teams would play another day. And thus MSU has another day to take a shot at advancing to the Super Regional round as Mississippi State and UL-Lafayette face off tonight in a winner-take-all matchup at 6 p.m. Despite how quickly things got out of hand last night, I have some confidence in MSU going into the evening. The Cajuns have spent all of their weekend starting pitching by now, and MSU still has Lucas Laster and Jacob Lindgren fresh, as well as Preston Brown. The offense also got going a bit late last night, which helped the Bulldogs burn a few more arms in that ULL bullpen. I fully expect tonight to be a 12-10 game somehow. We'll see. You already know who is left playing for all of the marbles tonight, but here's another look at how the regional bracket has unfolded:
Friday Games
(1) UL-Lafayette 0, (4) Jackson State 1
(2) Mississippi State 5, (3) San Diego State 2
Saturday Games
(1) UL-Lafayette 9, (3) San Diego State 2 (San Diego State eliminated)
(2) Mississippi State 3, (3) Jackson State 1
Sunday Games
(1) UL-Lafayette 11, (4) Jackson State 1 (Jackson State eliminated)
(1) UL-Lafayette 14, (2) Mississippi State 8
With two days now completed and Mississippi State sitting pretty for tonight's championship game with zero losses on the weekend, the bracket looks as so:
