The Adamsville, Alabama product became the first in a slew of new MSU commits on Thursday.

After gaining a big 2016 commitment on Wednesday with the addition of Briston Guidry, MSU was able to keep its recruiting momentum at full steam on Thursday as a trio of 2015 prospects committed to the maroon and white.  The first on the day was Adamsville, Alabama cornerback Maurice Smitherman, who noted to Bulldawgs 247 that MSU assistant Deshea Townsend was a big reason for his commitment:

"I could not turn down the chance to play for that great defense and to play for (MSU cornerbacks) Coach Deshea Townsend. I called Coach Townsend and told him I had great news for him and he said it was great news to hear."

The Alabama lockdown corner prospect has a very impressive offer list that includes Florida State, Penn State, Tennessee, LSU, Baylor and Clemson among many others.  His commitment was a huge get for MSU not only in terms of his talent but being able to pull him from such an impressive list of schools.

Smitherman is rated as a 3* prospect by 247 sports (just under a 4* rating though), and is rated as the 29th best cornerback in the country and the 11th best player in the state of Alabama for the 2015 class.  His commitment gave MSU 14 for the class of 2015, although that list would continue to grow later in the day.

One last note on Smitherman, and a comparison that I'm sure State fans will love:
