Despite a somewhat lackadaisical effort, Bulldogs prevail 30-10 to move to 4-0 for the first time since 1999

Three Devon Bell field goals and a strong defensive performance set the pace for 23rd ranked Mississippi State as they survived another sloppy performance and beat South Alabama, 30-10 to move to 4-0.

Tyler Russell had his biggest struggle of the year passing for 171 on 13-27 and one interception. The interception came on his 137th pass of the season and tied him with former Bulldog Wesley Carroll for the most consecutive passes without an interception in school history.

The offense came out and immediately went for down field passes. The power of the running game was not utilized often in the first quarter and it seemed to hurt MSU's chances of getting off the ground offensively.

"We weren't throwing the ball well," Coach Dan Mullen said. "It was just sloppy. Bad play calls".

South Alabama came out early and applied pressure to Russell and made things difficult for the MSU offense.

Both teams traded punts the entire first quarter with a total of five first downs combined by the two teams. But the Jaguars finally had the ball moving starting the second quarter and drove 50 yards in nine plays before stalling. Their field goal try of 47 yards, however, was no good and MSU would take over and finally take advantage.

The drive started with a five yard rush from Perkins to their own 35. Chad Bumphis then hauled in a 21 yard pass from Russell into Jaguar territory. That's when Perkins burst through the gap for a 44 yard touchdown run. The touchdown was his fifth of the season tying the amount of trips he had to the endzone in his previous two years combined.

After MSU forced another punt, they began to move the ball again. This time the drive was more methodical as the Bulldogs manufactured their longest drive of the year taking it 80 yards on nine plays. Josh Robinson started the drive off nicely with three consecutive carries marching 29 yards. Brandon Heavens followed that up with a 22 yard reception. A couple of plays later, Chris Smith joined the fold with a 21 yard reception of his own. Enter backup qb Dak Prescott, who has been labeled the Tim Tebow to Russell's Chris Leak. Prescott went seven yards in two carries and put it into the endzone for a 14-0 lead with over five and a half minutes remaining in the half.

The Bulldogs got the ball right back on a punt and Johnthan Banks gave them great field position at the USA 29. But the drive went nowhere and Bell was called on to kick the field goal. After much criticism from the MSU fanbase over the freshman's performance, he hit his second of the season from 42 yards out and State held a 17-0 advantage with three and a half minutes left in the first half.

The Bulldogs got it right back after a defensive stop and was in business offensively before Russell threw the ball into the hands of the Jaguar defender for his first interception of the season.

Three plays into the South Alabama drive, though, was a big play returned by the MSU defense. Junior Safety, Nickoe Whitley, intercepted the pass at his own eight yard line and took it 66 yards to the USA 26 with 30 seconds left. The drive manufactured nothing and Bell was brought in for the second time of the night and he split the uprights once again from 42 yards out and a 20-0 MSU halftime lead.

It wasn't what the Bulldogs wanted out of the first half and Mullen was not happy.

"When you get these games, you want to come out and play sharp and play crisp, and we didn’t do that in the first-half at all," Mullen said. "We went backwards a lot."

USA began the second half by driving the ball better than they had the entire first half. A total of 13 plays and 71 yards to be exact taking 5:12 off of the clock. The Bulldog defense did get a stop inside the five yard line to force a 22 yard field goal to put the Jags on the board at 20-3.

The coaches frustration was pouring into the players as Jameon Lewis immediately brought the ensuing kickoff out of the endzone and to midfield. The home team would drive 50 yards in just five plays thanks to a career long, 46 yard reception by Arceto Clark to the four yard line. The drive was capped by a Russell one yard touchdown run. They now lead the ball game 27-3 with 9:48 remaining in the third.

State would get the ball back on another punt and drive the ball into the fourth quarter with a long 12 play 44 yard drive that lasted nearly six minutes but gave them just three points as Bell tacked on his third field goal of the night, this one for 31 yards, and State had their last points of the night at 30-3.

The following USA drive, Banks made what might be the play of the year by leaping and reaching over the receiver, pulling down the ball, and taking it 47 yards. The interception was the 15th of Banks' career putting him one away from tying the all-time record set by Walt Harris. He also broke Derek Peagues' record for most interception return yardage with 274. That yardage is tops in the country by active players.

"That’s what I do. I am not trying to be cocky, but that is what Coach Mullen, Coach Smith and Coach Wilson expect me to do," Banks said. "I have to make plays, and the other team ought to know that if you throw it around me five or six times, I am going to get one of them."

USA would get a garbage touchdown with a 12 play 78 yard touchdown coming on an 18 yard page. That would provide the final score of 30-10 with MSU going to 4-0 on the season for the first time since 1999.

The Bulldogs had a sloppy contest against a lesser team for the second consecutive week but there were some strong points. Players all over the roster got in the game early and often, defense made some more big plays, and the special teams took a definitive step up into the right direction.

State takes a much needed week off as they now get ready for the stretch run with seven out of the remaining eight games coming against SEC competition.

Notes:

MSU has won 14 consecutive non-conference game for only the second time ever. They are four wins shy of tying the all-time record of 18 set by the 1941-47.

The 144 points scored in the first four games, is the most since State had 159 in 1944 and the 53 points surrendered are the least amount of points through the first four games since giving up just 28 in 1999.

State leads the nation in turnover differential at plus 13 now. Dan Mullen improved to 20-1 when winning the battle of the turnovers.

Although we all know the win is all that counts, this one was far from pretty tonight for Mississippi State. MSU was able to muster enough offense in spurts and got a strong showing from kicker Devon Bell to maneuver a 30-10 victory over South Alabama tonight at Davis Wade Stadium. The win pushes State to 4-0 on the year and into an off week where the dogs will look to work on issues and rest players as they prepare for the final 8 games of the schedule. Let's take a quick look at some of the highs and lows from tonight's game:

Credit goes to South Alabama, they came in and played with State the whole game, although the score would indicate differently (it was really 30-3, South Alabama scored their TD late). South Alabama had more first downs than State (21 to 15), and gained nearly as many yards (347 to State's 356). The Jaguars took advantage of soft zone coverage again for State to sling the ball around the yard, much like Troy did in the week prior.

Tyler Russell was batted around all night, and that is concerning to see going forward. Russell took some shots throughout the game, which really makes you worry about this offensive line that outside of Gabe Jackson and Dillon Day, is still very inconsistent.

Devon Bell eased worries for most State fans about the kicker position tonight. Bell boomed three field goals, two of which were from 42 yards (both of them would have been good from much further). Bell also boomed several kickoffs deep into the endzone. It appeared as if Bell is much more comfortable out there, which is great to see. He certainly has the talent, I think he was just struggling with the freshman jitters.

Russell did not have his best game, going 13 for 27 with 171 yards and 1 INT. Russell threw his 137th pass without an INT earlier in the game to tie the MSU record held by Wesley Carrol, then turned around and threw the INT the next play. LaDarius Perkins led the way with 69 yards rushing on 11 carries and 1 TD, with most of those yards coming on a 44 yard TD in the first half. Brandon Heavens led all receivers with 3 receptions for 55 yards.

Dak Prescott did get to see some action tonight, and was impressive in my eyes. Prescott scored a rushing touchdown inside the red zone, and also had a nice 30 yard completion late in the game.

All in all, this game was a yawner. State did win, but they essentially rode a 20 point 2nd quarter to a victory. We will take the victory for sure, and there were no apparent major injuries, so in the end that's all you can ask for. Still, one certainly hopes that State can make some improvements in the next several weeks before the gauntlet of games that is the back half of our schedule begins. Could not think of a better time for an off week.

One week after a narrow escape on the road, State travels back to the friendly confines of Davis Wade Stadium to take on the South Alabama Jaguars. State looks to extend their undefeated start to 4-0, which would mark only the second time we've accomplished that feat in the past 50 years. Rest assured after last week's sloppy play, Coach Mullen will have the dogs ready to play and not overlooking their opponent in the least. Check out the handy dandy links below, and enjoy the game!

I really don't expect much competition from South Alabama tonight. With the way the Troy game went last week (a kick is the britches), being at home and the Jaguars' talent level, I'm only expecting a little more resistant than what Jackson State gave. With that said, it should be a good game to get Dak Prescott some reps before we get into the teeth of the SEC schedule.

Prescott was able to get in the first two games, but did not appear vs. Troy. Against Auburn he came in for a couple of rushes including a 3rd down conversion in what amounted to a wildcat role. His only significant playing time was in the first game where he was 1 of 4 for 8 yards and ran it twice for 6 yards and a touchdown.

He did get a couple of throws in, but nothing major. I think this would be an excellent opportunity for him to get his arm stretched out a bit provided MSU is up comfortably in the 2nd half. I'd actually like to see Dak play most of the game once State gets a decent lead, perhaps three touchdowns and in the 2nd quarter. Maybe even if Mullen is not ready to sit Russell for the night, just get Prescott in with the 1st string and let him toss it around some.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Sometimes you just have to think that way. If Russell were to go down for any period of time it would at least be nice to know Prescott has some experience. When Tyler was a redshirt freshman he entered the first game vs. Memphis and was 13 of 16 for 256 yards and 4 touchdowns. Of course, those stats were not indicative of his ability at the time because Memphis was horrible, but at least he got some throws under his belt.

It would be nice for Dak Prescott to at least get 10-12 passes thrown vs. South Alabama. It would be great if he could throw for a TD, just to get that confidence that he can do it.

I can't really think of a better beer drinking, football watching food. I can't say it enough: BEER, CHICKEN, EGG ROLLS, FOOTBALL. That's the story of my life in five words. They are easy to handle, no mess, and taste great straight out of the oven or cooled. You could make them in the morning, wrap them in foil, and serve 'em up at the tailgate as a starter or as a private reserve for when your cousin knocks the plate of burgers onto the ground.

Bulldog fans it's time for another edition of the EA Sports NCAA '13 simulation. For those of you tuning in every week, I think you'll agree that last week's simulation with Troy was eerily similar to the real game. The end result was State winning a close one by six, and unfortunately the real deal ended in a very similar fashion with State winning by exactly the same margin.

This week's contest features a team that, no matter what this sim says, will probably produce the most certain victory MSU will get all year. Make sure you read till the end because I included a bonus score from another SEC game taking place this weekend. I promise it'll raise eyebrows! All the highlights are after the jump!

South Alabama* loses the coin toss and the Bulldogs decide to kick off first.

1st Quarter:

South Alabama returns the kickoff to the twenty yard line to begin the first quarter. The first pass thrown by the Jaguar quarterback is nearly picked off...the ball is tipped into the air and nearly intercepted at least two more times before it finally hits the turf. On second down a pass is completed for a five yard gain. The quarterback drops back for another pass on third down and is sacked for a four yard loss. Jaguars punt the ball away.

Jameon Lewis returns the ball all the way to the Jaguar 33 yard line and gives MSU excellent field position. Tyler Russell decides to run it himself on first down and gets nothing. LaDarius Perkins tries on second down and gets two yards. On third down Perkins gets another seven yards but comes up a yard short. It's fourth and one and the Bulldogs are going for it. It's gonna be a pass play and Russell can't find anyone to throw to! He throws the ball away just as he's about to get sacked. Turnover on downs!

Jaguars decide to run the ball on first down and the runner finds a huge hole. There's no one in front of him but as he crosses midfield a Bulldog defender chases him down and finally tackles him at the 30 yard line. USA's quarterback hands the ball off to the running back and it's a three yard gain. On second down they try their luck on the ground again, but this time it's a one yard loss. Obvious pass play is set up on third and eight. The pass is complete for a first down! Ball on the MSU eleven yard line. A nice run on first down gains eight, but second down the Bulldogs come up with a nice sack! It's now third and twelve. The qb fires the ball away, but his throw is off target...fourth down. Jaguars decide to settle for a field goal and succeed.

Jaguars lead 3-0

Jameon Lewis returns the kickoff to the 32 yard line. Tyler Russell's first pass is incomplete. On second and ten, he hands the ball off to Ladarius Perkins and he gets a decent gain. Its third and two for Perkins and he easily takes it to the house!

Bulldogs now on top 7-3

Jaguars return the kickoff to the twenty-three yard line. The quarterback scrambles on first down and manages a one yard gain. The running back gets three more on second down. Now it's third and six and the first quarter expires.

Bulldogs lead it by four after the first quarter 7-3

2nd Quarter:

It's going to be a passing attempt on third down and the pass is complete for a first down. Jaguars are now at their own 37 yard line. Quarterback fires a pass on first down for another completion and another first down. Jaguars are now at the Bulldog 46. This time they keep it on the ground and earn seven yards. They don't quite get it on second down...they need one more yard. On third down, the quarterback decides to pass, but the Bulldogs blitz and sack him easily. Jaguars punt the ball away.

After a touchback, Tyler Russell returns to the field and hands the ball off to Derrick Milton and Milton picks up a first down and a whole lot more...he is finally tripped up at the Bulldog 42 yard line. There is a flag on the play...offsides for the Jaguars...Bulldogs decline. Russell and Jameon Lewis connect on a pass for another quick first down. Bulldogs are now just past midfield. Russell goes to the air on first down and finds a wide open Chris Smith. Smith catches the pass and is brought down at the Jaguar fourteen yard line. After an incompletion, Russell fires a quick pass to Brandon Holloway for an eight yard gain. It's now third and two and the Bulldogs decide to hand the ball off to Perkins. Perkin's attempt to punch through for a first down fails miserably...he's brought down for no gain. Bulldogs decide to settle for a field goal.

MSU lead now extended to 10-3

Jaguars return the kickoff to the twenty yard line. The USA quarterback is sacked on first down and the next two downs accomplish nothing. Jaguars punt the ball away...MSU takes a timeout to conserve time. After the return by Jameon Lewis, Bulldogs take over at the Jaguar 43 yard line. Tyler Russell drops back to pass and Jameon Lewis gets vertical to catch the ball...he is brought down immediately but gains seven yards on the play. Russell drops back for another pass and again connects with Lewis for a first down. MSU now at the Jaguar 26. Another pass, another completion...this time to Ricco Sanders. Another fresh set of downs and only ten yards to the end zone. Perkins tries to run it in but only gets one yard. This time its a pass to Perkins on second down...it's caught, but no gain. Russell decides to go back to what was working and launches a pass to the back corner of the end zone. Jameon Lewis is there and catches the ball...he uses good footwork to stay in bounds for another Bulldog touchdown! Well, now the officials are reviewing it. Honestly, it looks like he's out, but considering this is SEC officials, they'll probably say he was in. And, I was right. The call on the field stands.

Bulldogs now lead it 17-3

Jaguars are going to try and get some points with less than a minute before half time. They return the ball to the 24 yard line on the kickoff. I could give the details of their drive, but instead I'll just say it ended with a Hail Mary and it was intercepted by the Bulldogs.

Bulldogs lead at Halftime 17-3

3rd Quarter:

Jameon Lewis returns the kick off to the 34 yard line Tyler Russell returns to the field and immediately fires a bullet that is completed for a first down. The next ball is a hand off and Perkins just runs over one of the Jaguar defenders for a first down. Perkins runs on first down and catches a pass on second down to move the chains again. Another run by Perkins and suddenly the Bulldogs are at the USA 10. The Bulldogs keep feeding the ball to Perkins but now he's denied any yards not once, but twice in a row. It's now third and ten. Tyler goes to the air and completes a pass for eight yards, just short of a first down. Bulldogs settle for another short field goal.

MSU now leads 20-3

The Jaguars will start their next drive at their own 20. A quick pass gains them six yards on first down. On second down the quarterback can't find anyone open...he decides to tuck it and run. He's got a first down but is just hammered by Josh Boyd...the ball pops free and Boyd falls on the fumble! Bulldogs take over at the Jaguar 35.

Tyler Russell hands the ball off to LaDarius Perkins and Perkins picks up a good block via Blaine Clausell. He gets enough to move the chains. Russell drops back for a pass and hits up his favorite receiver of the day...its Jameon Lewis again for another first down. A couple of incomplete passes now has MSU in a 3rd and goal situation at the Jaguar 6 yard line. Russell drops back to pass and finally hits a receiver I haven't seen all game...Chad Bumphis shows up and gets another Bulldog TD.

MSU up 27-3

Jaguars run the ball out of the endzone and only get to the 20. The defense seems to be playing a lot better in the second half...the qb can't find anyone open and throws the ball away. Apparently I spoke too soon because on second down he immediately hits a receiver for twelve yards and a first down. Again, the quarterback can't find anyone open. He decides to scramble again and manages to get another first down. Jaguars now at their own 47. Another pass...this time it's complete for a big first down. Jaguars now at the MSU 40. The Bulldogs are blitzing and the qb is hit as he throws...incomplete pass. The next play is another pass and the receiver has to jump to catch the ball, he's nailed by Cameron Lawrence--and the ball pops free! MSU recovers the fumble!

MSU takes over at their own 25. Russell decides to run the ball himself and picks up a big gain for a first down. Another pass followed by a run picks up another first down and the Bulldogs are now just past midfield. Perkins gets another handoff and is brought down hard and comes up just short of a first down. He's apparently injured on the play and Erin Andrews wastes no time letting us all know that he suffered a concussion. Now it's Milton time. Russell immediately hands the ball off to Milton and he responds with a first down. Next is an option play that produces two yards. Another option play on second down and Milton comes up one yard short. It's now third and one and the third quarter ends.

Bulldogs still lead it 27-3

4th Quarter:

It seems either Erin Andrews lied, or LaDarius Perkins snuck back onto the field because, concussion or not, he's back out there. Russell hands him the ball and he picks up a first down. It's first and goal. Russell can't find anyone open on the next play so he just decides to run it in himself for another Bulldog touchdown.

MSU now leads 34-3

After the Jaguars get the ball back, their quarterback throws three straight passes and all three are incomplete. They decide to go for it on 4th down. A bomb is thrown down field and, even though the receiver is double-covered, he miraculously catches the ball for a huge first down. Jaguars are now at the MSU 33. Another pass results in another ten yard gain and another first down. And there's another pass and another first down...its first and goal for the Jaguars now. This time the ball is handed off to the running back and he punches it in for six. The extra point is good and now the score is 34-10, Bulldogs.

The Jaguars try and onside kick but the Bulldogs gather it up first. As expected, the Bulldogs are now content with keeping the ball on the ground to melt the clock. Perkins is still in the game and now he's getting easy first downs...it seems they're going to wind the clock down pretty easy here...so easy in fact, Perkins just scored another TD!

Bulldogs now lead it 41-10

The Jaguars get the ball back with only 38 seconds left in the game. They go three and out, burn up their time outs, and are forced to punt the ball back to MSU. Tyler Russell takes a knee to end the game.

Bulldogs win it 41-10!

I'm not going to bore you with any notable stats...the game was totally and completely dominated by Mississippi State. BUT, Rece Davis provided an interesting update of another SEC game that was taking place near the end of our game. Take a look:

South Alabama - Saturday, September 22nd

Notes

There is something I could say here about how fortunate State has been to not have an abundance of a certain something that this article ascertains to, but I'm not going to say it. I'm not going to jinx it. Nevertheless, that certain something seems to have a small list of players out for State's game this weekend with South Alabama. Here are the injury notes for this week:

TE Brandon Hill is again listed as questionable for this weekend's game, still fighting with a nagging ankle injury. Hill was listed as doubtful for last weekend's Troy game, and did not end up participating in the game.

TE Malcolm Johnson, who has been out so far this season with a pectoral injury, is also listed as doubtful for this weekend's game. For the first time since his injury occurred, Coach Mullen gave a tentative timetable to when we might see the Mackey Award candidate return:

Mullen says he hopes to have tight end Malcolm Johnson back for Kentucky. That's the first we've heard of a timetable for him.

That goes along the lines of what we suspected - hold Johnson out this weekend in a game that should be manageable, and give him an extra two weeks time to heal before bringing him back against Kentucky. That certainly makes the most sense, and it will be nice to have Malcolm back as a weapon for Tyler Russell when the dogs head up to Lexington.

Mullen also listed RG Tobias Smith as "between questionable and probable" for Saturday. As we noted in some of our Troy post game coverage, Smith was noticeably absent from the field last Saturday, as Justin Malone got the start for him and we never saw Tobias take the field. Although we are unaware of his particular ailment, we certainly wish him a speedy recovery, especially with his noted history of having to battle through injuries. My guess: State will, like they are doing with Malcolm Johnson, hold Smith out this weekend and allow him the extra rest in the bye week before returning to action in two weekends against Kentucky.

Unless I just completely missed it, there is still no word on DT P.J. Jones, and when his indefinite suspension may be lifted. The other two players who at the beginning of the season were suspended along with Jones, DB Jamerson Love and WR Ricco Sanders, have since returned, yet there has been no sign of P.J. yet this season. As always, we will watch pre-game Saturday to see if P.J. is off suspension, as that is generally when Dan likes to indicate such.
