Top flight Bulldog quarterback prospect Cord Sandber appears to be headed to professional baseball without stepping foot in Davis Wade Stadium after being selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the third round.

It looks like Cord Sandberg will not be playing quarterback for the Mississippi State Bulldogs any time soon. The dual-sport prospect from Manatee High in Florida had committed to the Bulldogs, but his baseball prowess led to the Philadelphia Phillies selecting him in the third round and 89th overall.

John Lembo from the Bradenton Herald reported that Sandberg hopes to sign as early as Saturday after already having an agreement about the monetary terms of a contract with Philadelphia in place.

For the Bulldogs, the loss of Sandberg could help ease some of the scholarship restrictions in place for the next two seasons. It also leaves the Bulldogs again searching for future quarterbacks to follow as potential rivals to Dak Prescott starting with the 2014 season.

Should his baseball career not work, the history of a prospect trying his hand at pro ball and returning to college football has had some success. Chris Wienke spent six years in the Toronto Blue Jays organization, reaching Triple-A ball, before deciding to enroll at Florida State as a 25-year-old freshman. He later became the oldest winner of the Heisman Trophy at age 28 following his senior season and became a draft pick of the Carolina Panthers. He also led Florida State to a Sugar Bowl victory over Virginia Tech to give the Seminoles the National Championship.

Josh Booty, a former Florida Marlin and LSU quarterback, actually played in The Show, and earned a World Series ring before returning to football after being the fifth overall pick in the 1994 draft. He eventually guided the Tigers to the 2000 Peach Bowl before being taken in the NFL draft.

The talented Hutchinson C.C. (KS) defensive tackle took his official visit to MSU this past weekend, but ultimately decided that the best place for him was in Athens.

You can officially put wraps on the Mississippi State 2013 football recruiting class, and unfortunately, that class won't feature one extra name they were hoping to add today.

4-star Hutchinson C.C. defensive tackle Toby Johnson has announced his intentions to sign with the Georgia Bulldogs, which was made public this afternoon through a statement via the Hutchinson C.C. Athletics Twitter Feed.

Johnson originally was scheduled to announce his decision via live stream on the school's athletics site, but the feed went from pre-start to finished, without any video ever showing on-screen. Then came the announcement via the Hutchinson Twitter feed that Johnson was headed to Georgia, and just like that, it was over. We were tipped to this a bit just before the announcement was scheduled to start at 2 p.m., as ESPN reported that there were talks that Johnson was now leaning towards Georgia, but still, it seemed to most of us to be a bit of a stretch considering his involvement, or lack thereof, with Georgia as of late. It was a weird sequence of events to say the least, but maybe in the end Johnson just wanted to keep things more private, and I can respect that. There were nearly 20,000 page views on the feed before the announcement was made on the Twitter page, so there was definitely plenty of interest in Johnson's decision.

The decision to sign with Georgia bewildered many, as it was thought that Johnson's recruitment was down to Auburn and MSU. Johnson did have Georgia as a favorite for a long time early on, naming the Bulldawgs his favorites following a visit there in early December. However, Johnson continued to look at other schools, somewhat cooling off with Georgia after that. I'm assuming that's because the Georgia DL coach, Rodney Garner, left for Auburn around that time, but I don't know that. Just an assumption. Johnson is an Atlanta area native, as he moved there from Mississippi sometime in his early teens.

The Georgia decision comes as a surprise to me for two reasons: 1) He told the AJC just yesterday that he hadn't talked to Georgia in awhile, and 2) his recruiter at Georgia, DL coach Rodney Gardner, left UGA to go to join Gus Malzahn's staff at Auburn. If anywhere besides MSU, I figured Johnson would've ended up there. Oh well. This shows how much the fans and even some recruiting experts know sometimes with regards to where these guys want to ultimately go, or what happens sometimes behind the scenes. That's certainly not a shot at any recruiting writer or particular fan base, it's simply a tip of the cap to the process of recruiting, and just how complex it can be to decipher sometimes.

After his first official visit was cancelled several weeks ago due to cancelled flights, Johnson was in Starkville this past weekend visiting MSU, and was joined by his mother and other family members. State felt good about their chances to sign Toby, especially given the proximity of where his mother lives to Starkville. But in the end, Johnson opted to head to Athens to play for Mark Richt's Bulldawgs instead.

Best of luck to Toby in his future endeavors in Athens.

A late addition to the 2013 signing class, Jahmere Irvin-Sills has committed to Mississippi State, and will sign with the Bulldogs.

3-star Elkton, Maryland cornerback Jahmere Irvin-Sills has committed to play for Mississippi State, reports John Farley of CowbellClang.com.

The talented cornerback out of Eastern Christian Academy becomes a late addition to the 2013 class. He has committed, and will sign with MSU soon. He chose MSU over Auburn and West Virginia, among others. Irvin-Sills signature will be the 21st of the 2013 class for MSU. State signed 16 players today, and 4 enrolled early in January.

Jahmere's recruitment by MSU has been an interesting one to follow since the Bulldogs got involved in January. Irvin-Sills was initially committed to Auburn, but decommitted after Gene Chizik was fired last year. When he reopened his recruitment, MSU pursued him, and Jahmere visited on January 11th. Although he reportedly had a great visit, he did not give his pledge to MSU at that time. It's unclear as to the circumstances, but it appears that MSU may have asked him to hold off on a decision at that time. State was still in hot pursuit of Mackensie and Mackenro Alexander, and the potential signing of both brothers would have put MSU tight with spots for this class. However, as signing day unfolded today, the Alexanders opted for Clemson and Auburn respectively, and a spot opened up for Irvin-Sills.

With the departure of Corey Broomfield, Johnthan Banks, and Darius Slay from MSU's defensive backfield, it will be good to add in another defensive back to this class. State has already signed CB Tolando Cleveland and S Justin Cox in this class. Irvin-Sills will now join those two in MSU's class of defensive backs for 2013.

I have to say that I'm glad to see Irvin-Sills get this opportunity. After his visit, it seemed like he was ready to be a Bulldog, but tight spots might prevent him from doing so at that time. With the way things unfolded today, Irvin-Sills will now get a chance to be a part of this class, and that's certainly great to see.

With JE-S aboard, MSU's lone remaining target for the 2013 class is Hutchinson C.C. DT Toby Johnson. Johnson is scheduled to visit Starkville on February 15th, and will sign on February 19th. Johnson is considering MSU, Auburn, Georgia, and Oklahoma.

The remaining two unsigned members of MSU's 2013 recruiting class will go the junior college and greyshirt route, respectively.

As Mississippi State's 2013 football signing class comes to a close, we now know the destination of two commitments whose futures have been up in the air for some time now. Per Bulldawgs247, Ulric Jones and Trent Simpson of Oxford, Alabama will go the junior college route and greyshirt, respectively. It has been beleived for some time that Jones would be headed through the junior college ranks, while Simpson's future was up in the air over the last several weeks as well.

This move was expected, and that should round out all of the pre-NSD commitments. The only remaining question marks for the MSU class are Maryland CB Jahmere Irvin-Sills and Hutchinson C.C. DT Toby Johnson. Irvin-Sills all but had his spot bumped in MSU's class last week when Tolando Cleveland committed to MSU, but Mackensie Alexander's decision to go with Clemson could make room again for Irvin-Sills. The same could be said for Johnson, as State still has room following the Alexander twins decisions, as well as Tony Conner's decision to go with Ole Miss. We won't know more about Johnson's decision however until two weeks from now, as he is currently scheduled to sign on the 19th of February. Johnson is scheduled to visit MSU on February 15th. As for Irvin-Sills, we could know something as early as today, but it's unclear at this time if/when he may become part of the class.

As we told you last night, Ross was a huge late addition to this signing class. We only found out two weeks ago that Ross took a highly secretive visit to Starkville, and after that, we were kept in silence, as both Oklahoma State -- where Ross was originally committed since February of last year -- and Mississippi State fans sweated it out. There never really was any indication of Ross' potential decision until early Tuesday, when many in the Bulldog recruiting community started to feel like Ross was leaning towards coming to Starkville. He did ultimately decide to cast his lot with Dan Mullen and staff, and becomes a big addition to today's signing class.

Ross was the first commitment in the class of 2013 for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Dan Mullen and staff, with perhaps the biggest get of the 2013 haul for MSU, was able to pry him away in the final hours leading up to National Signing Day. Ross is an explosive, complete receiver that should prove to be a big asset to the wide receiver corps next Fall.

One of the more peculiar recruiting stories to follow this season is officially over, as the talented 5-star Florida recruit picks Clemson over Mississippi State and Auburn.

One of MSU's most peculiar targets to follow this year has been 5-star Immokalee, Florida cornerback Mackensie Alexander. Alexander, who was once committed to Tennessee last year, had since been an expected Clemson, Mississippi State, and then lately, Auburn lean. His recruitment had been quite a guessing game for many recruiting writers, but today, he ended that guessing game, choosing Clemson over Auburn and Mississippi State.

Alexander was the last remaining un-committed prospect on MSU's roster. Deon Mix chose Auburn, Tony Conner to Ole Miss, and Fred Ross committed to MSU last evening. Mackensie's brother, who was also an MSU target but never high on State, chose Auburn as well.
