The long-awaited deal is finally in place for Collins to stay in Starkville.

After a weekend full of rumors of both his courting by Florida State and an offered deal from Mississippi State, it appears that Geoff Collins is finally and officially set to remain in Starkville.

Mississippi State University announces this afternoon that defensive coordinator Geoff Collins has agreed to a two-year contract extension with the school. The deal, which was finally hinted to this morning and made official just a short while ago, guarantees Collins $1.2 million over the next two seasons. The breakdown is as follows, courtesy of Bob Carskadon:

Terms of Geoff Collins' new deal: $1.2 million for two years. $575,000 first year and $625,000 in 2015.

After a successful 2013 defensive campaign -- one that saw State's defense improve greatly in its final four games --, many openly expressed a need to give Collins a contract extension and a raise to keep the fast rising coach at MSU. After the news of him being an FSU candidate made its rounds this past weekend, it seems that the already-in-play process of getting Collins his raise and extension was expedited, and the deal is finally done today.

The news is a great relief to State fans, as I think we all expected Collins to be tempted to leave for the 2013 National Champion Noles. Now it looks like he'll be in Starkville for at least a little while longer, which is great news.

In addition to the news of Collins' extension, the official release states that "Contract adjustments for the remainder of the MSU coaching staff are expected to be announced in the near future". That could allude to a number of assistant coaches on the staff, including Billy Gonzales, who is rumored to be a candidate to move up into the vacant offensive coordinator position. We should have official word on who will be getting raises and who may be moving up soon.

After a weekend of wondering, all appears set for Mississippi State to keep Geoff Collins as the Bulldogs' defensive coordinator.

After Friday led fans to believe that Mississippi State defensive coordinator was heading to Florida State before they were told that work on an extension was in place, the weekend provided silence on the rumor front until Mississippi State's Bob Carskadon announced that two-year extension to keep Collins at Mississippi State had reached its final stages.

While numbers have not yet been announced, the university is expected to release them later today. For the Bulldogs, this helps keep their defense in place for the 2014 season. In Collins's only year as the full-time defensive coordinator, his squad ranked 18th in the nation in total defense and 33rd in scoring defense. The Bulldogs also forced 25 turnovers, good for 35th in the country.

Mississippi State fans have had an eventful week concerning the fate of their defensive coordinator, Geoff Collins. In the span of the last seven days, Collins has been faintly linked to Georgia, more seriously linked to Florida State, and apparently shown contract love by the Bulldogs.

"Should I stay or should I go?" Mississippi State defensive coordinator Geoff Collins may end up asking himself that famous question posed by The Clash given the reported developments around him, his position at Mississippi State and the vacant defensive coordinator position at Florida State.

Earlier this week, Geoff Collins had been floated about as a candidate for the open defensive coordinator position at Georgia. After that job went to Florida State's Jeremy Pruitt, Collins's name again surfaced for another position--Defensive Coordinator at Florida State.

Only a few hours after that tweet, Pete Roussel said Collins had not even yet interviewed for the Florida State position.

Per source, Mississippi State defensive coordinator Geoff Collins has NOT interviewed with FSU, at this point. http://t.co/Gkpm6yZhl0

The news continued to get better for Bulldog fans Friday night. Roussel later reported that Mississippi State had put together a significant offer in terms of years on a contract and money to give Collins more reason to stay in Starkville.

The timing of the extension and pay raise report proves to be curious. Early in the day, Collins had been mentioned as a strong candidate for the Florida State position. Later in the day, it seemed as if it would only be a matter of time before Collins interviewed with the Seminoles, but by the end of the night, it appeared that an extension would be offered to Collins.

This leaves only two real options as to how the situation has unfolded thus far. Either Mississippi State intended all along to give this extension to Collins and had only been hammering it out, or the Bulldogs have decided to act quickly to counteract the interest Florida State has reported shown in Collins.

The length of the contract and the amount will be interesting to see, and it will be interesting to see if Collins ends up interviewing in Tallahassee.

Check back in for more updates on the situation with Collins.

After a solid 2013 campaign, Mississippi State defensive coordinator Geoff Collins has gained the interest of Florida State concerning their defensive coordinator vacancy.

According to this tweet from CBS's Bruce Feldman, Mississippi State defensive coordinator Geoff Collins has picked up Florida State's attention for its vacant defensive coordinator position.

Collins, who took over the play-calling duties in the 2013 Gator Bowl, handled the defensive coordinator duties full time in 2013. During his first year, the Bulldogs gave up 23 points per contest. Opponents picked up 144 yards per game on the ground, scoring 17 total rushing touchdown. Through the air, foes of the Bulldogs averaged 205 yards per game and scored a total of 18 touchdowns. Mississippi State also picked off 14 passes and forced 12 fumbles while recovering eleven of them.

Collins came to Mississippi State in 2011 as the Linebacker Coach/Co-Defensive Coordinator after spending one year in the same position at Florida International. Collins also spent the 2008-2009 seasons at Central Florida, so he is a coach with ties to the Sunshine State.

As far as ACC ties, Collins had two stints at Georgia Tech. The first one came during the 1999-2001 seasons as a graduate assistant, and after spending the 2002-2005 seasons at Western Carolina as the Catamounts' defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach, Collins returned to Georgia Tech as the recruiting coordinator in 2006.

Mississippi State also has to replace their former offensive coordinator, Les Koenning, who took the Wide Receivers coach position at Texas earlier this week.
