MSU looked good in victory.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs improved to 4-2 with a 45-17 victory over the Troy Trojans Saturday. Here's what I saw.

1. This looked like the most complete MSU game since last season. The offense put up points. Fred Ross had a touchdown return, and the defense started strong.

2. Nick Fitzgerald impressed in extended action. There is a long way to go before next year, but he has to be the favorite to be the starter in 2016.

3. Hello, Brandon Bryant. The safety picked up his first start and immediately got credited with a sack and a forced fumble. The Bulldogs had not recovered one all year, and this one ended in a defensive score. Players make plays. I've got a feeling WMD might mention this in his Armchair QB.

4. Halftime stats still looked a bit worrisome from the rushing game. Not sure how to feel about that.

5. Can't say enough about the defense. Maybe this becomes a turn it around game for them and the rest of the team going forward for the rest of the season.

The Bulldogs are in search of a clean game and a fourth win. Can they get both against Troy?

The Mississippi State Bulldogs will take the field today as massive favorites over the visiting Trojans of Troy. While the Bulldogs should walk away with a more or less easy victory, many fans will watch to see how the team achieves the victory.

Will the Mississippi State defense put together four good quarters of play? Will the defense force turnovers? Can the Bulldogs find a consistent rushing threat?

We will know all of that and more within an hour.

It's early on gameday and there's no sight of the Troy Trojan football team, yet a large wooden horse has appeared on the field at Davis Wade Stadium.

It's a crisp, early October morning on the campus of Mississippi State and this weekend's opponent, the Troy Trojans, are nowhere to be found. The team made it to town late last evening in advance of today's game (3 p.m., SEC Network), yet all signs appear to show that they left in the dead of night without any prior warning.

While that has taken place, a large, mysterious wooden horse has appeared on the field at Davis Wade Stadium. The event staff is currently working on strategies to move the horse out of the stadium; however, the thought is that there's not much rush to get it out with a game seemingly in doubt for today. Despite its presence, MSU is scheduled to make a more relaxed and unguarded appearance in its normal pregame routine in the next several hours.

We'll bring you more here at For Whom the Cowbell Tolls when we know more about the situation. Until then this has been cristilmethod lying in wait for For Whom the Cowbell Tolls news channel 12.

Mississippi State (3-2) will try to jump back into the win column as they take on the Troy Trojans (1-3) out of the Sun Belt Conference.

For the Bulldogs, the game begins a three-game stretch at home that presents a good opportunity for a 6-2 record going into November.

MSU dropped out of the top 25 after last week's 30-17 loss to Texas A&M -- a game that saw several Bulldogs go down with injuries. Kendrick Market is out for the season after tearing his ACL. Gabe Myles, Rufus Warren, Joe Morrow and Will Redmond are all listed as questionable for this week's game.

The next three games will be used to get young players such as Jamal Peters, Malik Dear, and Elgton Jenkins more experience, especially with so many guys ahead of them down with injuries. While Louisiana Tech and Kentucky will not be cake walks, State should be able to get away with playing a lot of youth against Troy.

The Trojans' only win so far in 2015 came against Charleston, and they lost to NC State and Wisconsin by considerable margins. They played their first conference game last week against South Alabama, falling 24-18.

Headlines to watch

Emphasis on balance

Dan Mullen said this week he wants to get back to playing balanced football on offense. Of course, he's referring to fixing the problems in the run game more than anything. MSU has failed to find a consistent running back with Dak Prescott leading the way in rushing with just 217 yards. Against a Troy defense that gives up a robust 218 rushing yards per game, MSU should be able to work out some kinks or at least give one of the running backs a chance to separate themselves.

I have a sneaky suspicion we'll see Aeris Williams get the start. While his fumble in the red zone against A&M was an absolute killer, I think he's proved to be the most explosive back to this point. That's outside of Brandon Holloway, but with his size we all know he'll never be the starter. With nearly half the season gone, now is a good of time as any to find that every-down back. They will all have the opportunity this week to make their case.

Troy's coach familiar with MSU

First year coach Neal Brown is no stranger to MSU. He served as offensive coordinator the past two seasons at Kentucky -- MSU's permanent cross divisional opponent out of the SEC East. MSU got the better of last year's matchup with the Wildcats, 45-31 in Lexington, but that offense gave MSU fits at times.

Brown doesn't have a Patrick Towles or many other offensive weapons to work with any more, but it can't hurt that he's already familiar with MSU's defense. Yeah it was Geoff Collins he was facing, but Diaz's base scheme isn't all that different. He needs to bring pressure with different looks and not sit back in soft coverage. Troy has been average at best throwing the ball, but you know the secondary is the first place Brown will want to attack.

Forcing turnovers

Manny Diaz made it a point this week in practice for his unit to get their hands on the ball and finish plays. The defense has missed out on several potential turnovers this season -- especially on interceptions -- and Diaz is challenging his guys to capitalize on those opportunities.

After forcing 23 turnovers last year, MSU's defense has only forced three through five games this season -- the lowest number in the conference. Five fumbles have hit the ground and not one has been recovered, and I can think of at least three interceptions that should have been caught. Just way too many missed opportunities on that side of the ball, and the next three games are a good opportunity to clean that up.

Prediction

There's no way this game should be in doubt past the second quarter. This week is all about rotating and getting more experience. One of the young running backs needs to step up and emerge from the pack. I think they will, and I think it will be Aeris Williams. This game won't last very long. I think Mullen is going to run, run, and run some more until he finds his running back. And against a pretty bad Troy defense, State's offensive line should be able to take full control.

MSU- 52 Troy- 10

What will happen when the Mississippi State Bulldogs face off against the Troy Trojans Saturday?

Mississippi State enters a three game stretch where that will see the Bulldogs be a home favorite for the rest of October. Remember not so long ago when there was not as much confidence coming into these games? It's wild how that has changed in the last seven years.

After what feels like a woulda-shoulda-coulda loss to Texas A&M last weekend, how will Mississippi State respond in their game against the Troy Trojans?

Best Case Scenario: This game looks very similar to the 2013 contest, and the Bulldogs blast the Trojans. Dak and the wide outs have a solid performance, and the Bulldogs move the ball on the ground without fumbling. New faces appear on defense and play well, and the Bulldogs leave the field with a 66-7 win.

Worst Case Scenario: The Bulldogs try to establish the running game early, but the senior-QB curse strikes. Prescott suffers an injury that takes him out of this game, and makes the next several games questionable. Mullen relies on the running backs, but they cough up two fumbles deep in their own territory, allowing two Troy touchdowns. Nick Fitzgerald throws a pick-six, and the Trojans take the lead 21-18. Tornado sirens start to go off, and we all know what happens next.

Bold Prediction: Troy will be outmatched in this contest. Dak Prescott will go for over 450 total yards, and he flirt with his all-time mark of 500 total yards that he set against Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl. Jackie Parker holds the total touchdowns in a game record with six. Prescott takes that spot away with seven total touchdowns against Troy.

Teams like the Troy Trojans should replace FCS schools on the Mississippi State out of conference Schedule

When talking about tasks associated with running a sports team, scheduling never gets the recognition it deserves in the difficulty department. Finding teams willing to play against your team can be tough. Filtering those teams through open dates, travel, costs, and other expectations makes the task even tougher. Never mind the idea of scheduling many seasons in advance and the hope of using a schedule to build momentum. (On a personal note, I coached several sports on the high school level; building a schedule at that level was tough, so I can't imagine it at the college level with all the complexities involved.) However, with all of those considerations, games, such as this one against Troy, highlight what Mississippi State should strive to do with its out of conference schedule.

One aspect of the out of conference schedule for Mississippi State and the rest of the SEC going forward is that they must play a Power Five opponent or an independent listed as acceptable. Scott Stricklin jumped on this requirement quickly, and he snatched up exciting opponents for the foreseeable future with BYU, North Carolina State, Arizona and Kansas State. No one can have complaints about these match ups.

However, one area where complaints begin usually revolve around the playing of FCS teams. Earlier this year, the Bulldogs took on the Northwestern State Demons in nothing more than a glorified scrimmage. Fans had to pay good money to see that game, and it was not very fun after the beat down began. It is time for Mississippi State to steal a page from the Big Ten and eliminate FCS games. With Mississippi State being a program on the rise, one can legitimately question what the Bulldogs gain from such a matchup. While the Bulldogs have such games on the schedule over the next few seasons, and while quirky things such as Tulane pulling out of a game can force the scheduling of an FCS foe, the days of Mississippi State renting these cupcakes should stop.

Instead, Mississippi State should take a regional approach to scheduling out of conference foes. Teams like Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State rarely leave their home state to play any out of conference foe other than a Power Five team. Mississippi State cannot quite afford to do that, but the Bulldogs could manage an out of conference schedule that sees the Bulldogs travel no more than four hours from Jackson for all games other than a Power Five game.

One of the ways Mississippi State has avoided huge costs in out of conference scheduling has been to agree to a 2 for 1 format with smaller schools that sends the Bulldogs on the road once to get two games at home. Any Mississippi State fan that went to Troy a few years ago can see what that is a good thing for college football. Keeping a four hour radius with Jackson in the middle of the circle would pull in the following teams: Memphis, Tulane, Southern Miss, South Alabama, Arkansas State, UL Monroe, Louisiana, and Louisiana Tech. Troy only falls about 30 minutes outside of that circle and could be added to the group.

Instead of playing the Northwestern States and Alcorns of the world, the Bulldogs could face FBS foes that would provide more of a test but not strike a ton of fear into the hearts of the Bulldogs. One might even suspect that fans would rather travel to one of these games than watch a predestined beat down occur at Davis Wade Stadium (the Maine game excluded from that whole thought process).

This would not be something that could happen in the next two years, but perhaps further down the road. The Bulldogs travel to UMass next year, and they have FCS foes on tap in 2016 and 2017. No complaints on most of those games as Stricklin was forced into a scramble after Tulane dropped the Bulldogs. In fact, scheduling a home and home like the UMass series on occasion could be a fair break from this idea.

The Bulldogs have plenty of opponents close to home to provide a more meaningful matchup than a game against an FCS foe, and those opponents would make for interesting road games from time to time. It is time to drop the FCS foes and add another FBS team to the schedule each season.
