No. 6 Mississippi State baseball hosts Jackson State

STARKVILLE, Miss. — The No. 6 Mississippi State baseball program is set to host Jackson State for its 2021 home opener Wednesday at 4 p.m. CT at Dudy Noble Field. It can be watched on SEC Network+.

The Bulldogs (2-1, 0-0 SEC) are coming off two wins at the State Farm College Baseball Classic last weekend. MSU beat then-No. 9 Texas 8-3 and then-No. 4 Texas Tech 11-5. MSU dropped a 3-2 contest to then-No. 11 TCU. The wins mark the first time the Bulldogs opened the season with a pair of wins over ranked teams since 1993.

MSU outhit each of its three opponents, compiling 31 hits compared to 19 by the opposing teams. The MSU pitching staff recorded 41 strikeouts and limited the opposition to a .196 batting average.

Junior Luke Hancock leads the Bulldogs in hits (7), batting average (.583) and runs (4). Senior Josh Hatcher has recorded five hits and a .385 batting average. Senior Rowdey Jordan has a .286 average with four hits and a team-high six RBIs.

Jackson State (0-3) dropped each of its first three contests at Mercer to start the 2021 season. The Tigers hit .128 as a team, while Mercer hit .333. The Bears outscored Jackson State 33-0 in the three-game series.

Wednesday’s meeting will be the 61st between the two programs. The Bulldogs own a 52-8 series lead and have won three straight games against Jackson State, winning 17-4 in 2019, 12-1 in 2018 and a 3-1 in 2014.
