Where Did You Come From Sun Belt?

The Sun Belt has made its mark on college football this year.

Nelson Chenault-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The Sun Belt has really made a name for itself in 2012. They have long been known as the worst conference in Division 1-A, but that doesn't appear to be the case anymore. Mississippi State has already taken a bite out of the Sun Belt, but there is still more on the docket amid the SEC schedule remaining.

The Sun Belt has had some big wins so far this year. Louisiana-Monroe, of course, has had a great start beating Arkansas, taking Auburn to overtime and then taking Baylor to the brink. Western Kentucky beat Kentucky and Middle Tennessee had a decided victory over Georgia Tech. There have been some close calls as well; Troy only lost to #20 Mississippi State by 6, and FIU lost to #19 Louisville by just 7.

While there have been some big wins for the Sun Belt, they aren't about to become the next BCS conference. They are 2-7 vs. the SEC, 0-3 vs. Big 12, 1-2 vs. ACC, 0-1 vs. Pac-12, 0-1 vs. Big Ten and 0-1 vs. Big East.

What the Sun Belt has done is overtake Conference USA....they are 5-1 vs. C-USA this year. In the battle to be the south's best non-AQ conference, the Sun Belt is getting it done. You could make an argument that they are better than the WAC, MAC and top to bottom better than the Mountain West.

MSU has two of the SEC's seven wins vs. the Sun Belt. They'll go for number three in Week 8 vs. Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders have now won three straight after a loss to McNeese State in the opener. Between now and then they'll face ULM and FIU.

The Sun Belt isn't a joke anymore...watch out.
