After knocking off three-straight top ten teams, Mississippi State has taken over the claim as the No. 1 team in the country for the first time in school history. After last week, Bulldog fans could believe that the Amway Coaches Poll did not feel much love for Mississippi State as the team finished at No. 6 in the poll. While that was still the highest ranking ever for the Bulldogs, it felt much lower than it should be.
That feeling began to change this week as the Bulldogs moved past Notre Dame, Baylor, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Floirda State spot in the Week Eight poll which was released Sunday. The Bulldogs received 1490 points to edge out No. 2 Florida State, who had 1489 points. The Seminoles did earn more first place votes (31) than Mississippi State (26).
Looking around the SEC, the Bulldogs' Magnolia State rival, Ole Miss, stands in at No. 3. The two teams last defeated by Mississippi State, Auburn and Texas A&M, stand at No. 8 and No. 21 respectively. Also in the SEC West, Alabama stands at No. 7, and in the east, Georgia stands as the lone representative in the poll at No. 10.
The Bulldog's next opponent, Kentucky, received points in the others getting votes categories.
It will be interesting to see what happens next week in the polls. Mississippi State has a bye week, and Florida State squares off with No. 5 Notre Dame.
