Mississippi State Announced a Football Opponent for a Season 10 Years Away

The Bulldogs are making sure they have their Power 5 opponent scheduled really far in advance.

Where will you be in 10 and 11 years from now? I’ll be 47 years old, and it looks like I will be watching the Mississippi St. Bulldogs football team travel to Minnesota to take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

As has been the case with every Power 5 team scheduled since the SEC mandated each team must have one on their schedule, the Bulldogs will travel to TCF Bank Stadium first before the Gophers return the trip to Starkville in 2027. The games are scheduled to be played on September 12, 2026 and September 11, 2027.

Currently the Bulldogs have the Kansas St. Wildcats scheduled for 2018 and 2019, North Carolina St. Wolfpack in 2020 and 2021, and the Arizona Wildcats in 2022 and 2023. There currently isn’t a Power 5 conference opponent scheduled for the season of 2024 and 2025.

I like the direction the Bulldogs have taken with the scheduling of their Power 5 opponents. There is no way to know how good or bad any of these programs will be when we actually play them, but if historical trends prevail, they should be in about the same ballpark as the Bulldogs if not further behind them.

When the first three schools were scheduled to meet the Power 5 mandate were announced, they were all announced relatively close together. I would expect an announcement soon after an AD has been hired on how the Bulldogs will meet that mandate for 2024 and 2025.

One other interesting note is this announcement was made with an Interim Athletics Director. I would assume the discussions were close to finalized before Scott Stricklin’s departure. Regardless, we now know another team the Bulldogs will play in the not-so-soon future.
