I can’t think of a single fan of the Mississippi St. Bulldogs that will tell you the 2016 season was always fun. Yes, there were some moments we enjoyed it more than others, but finding a lot of fun in this season was not easy.
A lot of that changed when the Egg Bowl took place. The Bulldogs absolutely hammered the Ole Miss Rebels 55-20. It was a one sided affair for most of the game, and had it not been for a successful fake punt in the second quarter, it could have been even more lopsided than it was. Winning the Egg Bowl took the sting of a lot of the season away.
What made this Egg Bowl win so sweet over some of the previous ones was the circumstances surrounding it. The Rebels were supposed to challenge for a chance to compete in the College Football Playoff in 2016. Losing to us kept them from playing in the postseason at all. The Rebels won the last two Egg Bowls convincingly, but Mississippi State’s margin of victory was greater than the two previous Egg Bowls combined.
Adding to the sweetness is the possibility this was the last hurrah for Ole Miss for quite some time. The NCAA investigation and the details surrounding it have gotten worse every single time news has broken about it. Ole Miss could be facing some very serious sanctions which will make it tough for them to compete in the years ahead. So the 2016 Egg Bowl definitely makes my list of favorite moments this year.
