Mississippi State Baseball Drops Five Spots in Polls Following 2-2 Weekend

As expected MSU fell in the polls following a poor showing on opening weekend.

Opening weekend didn't go like MSU baseball fans planned. The diamond dogs blasted South Dakota State twice but lost both games against a quality opponent in Florida Atlantic.

MSU lost its opener on Friday 10-6 to FAU. After a 17-4 rebound win against SDSU Saturday, a 4-0 loss to FSU in game two spoiled the weekend. The Bulldogs did close out on Sunday with a 10-run victory over SDSU in seven innings, but it wasn't enough to save them from sliding in the polls.

D1Baseball released its second top-25 poll of the season on Monday, and MSU fell five spots to No. 20. That's a generous spot to be given last season's 24-30 campaign and the sluggish start to 2016.

MSU is on the verge of being knocked out of the Baseball America Poll, who ranked them No. 24 -- down four slots from the preseason.

Rankings mean very little at this point and MSU hasn't showed anything to warrant a top-25 ranking, but this next week will determine whether MSU stays in that range. A tough home game against Memphis Tuesday is followed by another four-game weekend against UMass Lowell and Nicholls State.

Memphis defeated MSU last season in Starkville 7-1.
