Senior Deontay Evans to Transfer From Mississippi State

Senior safety Deontay Evans will finish up his career outside of Starkville

Derick E.Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

With the kickoff of SEC Media Days being today, many media members from across the south packed into their cars and drove to Hoover to get an advanced look on what this might hold for the SEC. For the media members covering Mississippi State, there wasn't much news expected until tomorrow. But, it looks like Mississippi State will be without a senior defensive back as we head into this season.

Deontay Evans transferring isn't coming as a huge surprise. Although the fifth year senior has made a total of 85 tackles in 39 career appearances, 33 of which came last season, Evans likely would have a hard time competing for playing time in his final year.

Guys like Brandon Bryant, Jamal Peters, Kivon Coman, and Mark McLaurin are the future of the position, with Coman being the only senior on the two deep. Bryant, Peters, and McLaurin are all sophomores, but have incredible potential and talent and are expected to improve greatly in their second season playing with the team.

Still, it is a bit disappointing to lose a veteran player from such a young team. Hopefully it all works out for Evans at his next school. Good luck and thanks for all that you've done for Mississippi State these past three seasons, Deontay.
