Evaluating the 2020 Mississippi State Recruiting Class Linebacker Tyrus Wheat

NCAA Football: Music City Bowl-Mississippi State vs Louisville Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Over the years, the Mississippi State Bulldogs have had talented linebackers that have wound up playing on Sundays and Tyrus Wheat is no exception. Tyrus Wheat was rated a three-star linebacker by most services and has the potential to see the field at some point this season. Wheat has the production from the junior college ranks and observers are expecting big things from him.

What I like about Wheat is that he has played a number of positions over the past few years. Wheat has done well playing the safety position, but he has proven to be a force at the linebacker spot. Wheat played in 19 games for Copiah-Lincoln Community College. During his career at Copiah-Lincoln, Wheat totaled 104 tackles, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and five interceptions.

Wheat has a nose for the football, and he has picked off enough passes to show that he will target the football. Wheat has a chance to earn some playing time and his size at 6’2” 250 lbs will help him transition to playing in the SEC well. The part of the game that I am most impressed with is his ability to diagnosis a play and track the football. Wheat does a great job of making a tackle, he is consistent and always seems to be in a position to make a tackle. I look for Wheat to earn some playing time as the year progresses and he has the potential to become a force in the SEC.
