1-The number of national seeds qualified for the College World Series. If that number holds, it will be the lowest number to ever go to Omaha. At the most, three more nationally seeded teams will go to Omaha in 2013. 2007 and 2010 tied for the lowest number of national seeds in Omaha, with three, under the super regional format. Interestingly enough, the Mississippi State Bulldogs played in Omaha in 2007.
The closest the tournament has ever come to hosting all eight national seeds was in 2001 when Cal State-Fullerton, Miami, Southern California, Stanford, Tulane, Georgia, and Nebraska all qualified. Only the seventh seed, East Carolina, failed to live up to their seeding.
Outside of LSU, three national seeds, North Carolina, Oregon State, and Virginia, remain alive, but all will have to win a game three to advance. Virginia will also have to comeback and win a resumed game two against Mississippi State.
0-Never before has Omaha's field been made up of all regional No. 1 seeds under the super regional format. This will change in 2013 as all of the teams still alive played as one seeds in their regional. However, it will not be the first time that the field has been made up of all regional hosts.
In 2001, Tennessee joined seven other regional hosts in Omaha after hosting as a two-seed with Wake Forest playing as the one seed. That same year, Mississippi State played as a one seed at Ohio State. In 2002, Notre Dame advanced as a hosting two seed with South Alabama being the one seed in the South Bend Regional.
29-It has been almost three decades since a Big 10 school has participated in the College World Series. That streak will come to an end when Indiana steps foot on the field in TD Ameritrade Park.
8-The Bulldogs have appeared in the College World Series on eight occasions, which ties Mississippi State with the Florida Gators for 16th on the all-time appearance list. The Bulldogs first made it in 1971 and last appeared in 2007.
A win coupled with a North Carolina loss would find the Bulldogs tied for fourteenth with the Tar Heels at 9 appearances.
The Bulldogs also have the fifth most appearances without a national championship. Florida State has suffered the most futility in Omaha, reaching the College World Series 21 times without winning a title. Clemson is second on the list with 12. Northern Colorado is a surprise on the list with ten appearances, and the Tar Heels come in fourth with nine. Four ACC teams should not be a surprise as the ACC has not won this championship since Wake Forest took the crown in 1955.
2-Omaha could host two teams that have never played in the College World Series. Indiana has never played in the College World Series, and if Kansas State joins them, they will also set off on their maiden voyage to Omaha for the College World Series.
14-The page in the 2011 Division 1 Baseball Championship handbook that says if a super regional cannot be completed because of inclement weather, the tournament committee decides which team advances. The 2012 and 2013 handbooks are behind passwords (or at least beyond my google skills).
The good news for Bulldog fans, the weather should be clear in Charlottesville Tuesday, if not later Monday, allowing for the resumption of the super regional series.
