Love MSU football, recruiting, or basketball? For Whom the Cowbell Tolls is looking for writers

We're looking for a few good men or women to come aboard and join our merry band of bloggers. If you enjoy MSU sports, and enjoy writing about them, then we may have a spot for you.

Butch Dill

Do you have a knack for writing, presenting an argument or writing in detail about current events, based on dynamic flow of information? Are you a college student who is looking for additional writing experience and mentorship to lay the foundation for a career in sports journalism? Are you a fan who loves sharing your opinion on MSU sports, and would like to do so in a blog format?  Do you want to come aboard one of the fastest growing blogs covering MSU sports?

If any of the above rings true for you, then we're certainly excited to hear it. We'd love to have you at For Whom the Cowbell Tolls. Although FWtCT already features a strong staff made up of talented contributors, we're looking to expand our group even more.

We'd like our writers to be able to commit to publishing at least one article a week, on an MSU athletics topic of their choosing. From statistical analysis, to the breakdown of plays, to satire, to general opinion: FWtCT covers a diverse range of topics on MSU sports, and we feel like our site will provide you with the opportunity to write about nearly any angle on MSU athletics that you're interested in.

Writer positions, while not paid at first, have the potential to be paid, based on output and site growth goals. A number of writers around SB Nation's tremendous college network have gone on to receive compensation to work at their respective destination sites as well as SBNation.com over the years. Also, their work at our site over the past year helped two former FWtCT contributors land positions with the Rivals Network, covering MSU football and MSU football recruiting.  We feel like our site not only provides a place for fans to share their opinions and analysis, but a place for young journalists to cut their teeth, gaining experience on a site that gives them the opportunity to grow as a writer while getting their work out in front of thousands of Bulldog fans.  Depending on your work, dedication and talent, there are always opportunities for talented writers with high enthusiasm and overall creativeness. In particular, we'd love to hear from those who would be interested in covering MSU football and basketball recruiting, as well as those interested in handling FWtCT's post game football coverage.  For an idea of the type of coverage we're looking for on those topics, you can check out any of the following links: (Commit Story, Big Dawg Camp Recap, Game Recap, Game Recap 2, Stats)

Our ideal candidate:

  • Has strong knowledge about MSU, both current and historical.
  • Possesses strong writing skills.
  • Has a nose for news, both in knowing what is important and identifying where to find it.
  • Is able to write in line with our best practices for growing an audience.
  • Is able to write and publish quickly while remaining accurate.
  • Is a self-starter who can work with minimal direction.
  • Possesses solid communication skills.
  • Is comfortable working in a virtual environment.

Previous writing experience is preferred, but not required. If you'd like to join our team, or would just like more information, please email a resume (and a writing sample) to forwhomthecowbelltolls@gmail.com.

We look forward to having you join our family! Hail State!
