Florida and Jim McElwain made it official Thursday that the former Colorado State head coach would now patrol the sidelines for the Gators. That now leaves an opening in Fort Collins, Colorado, for a new head coach for the Rams. According to The Coloradoan, Mississippi State Co-Offensive Coordinator Billy Gonzales should be looked at as a potential replacement.
Gonzales fits the mold of what many coaches in the non-Power Five conferences would look like. He is young and this position would offer him a chance to prove what he could do as a head coach. He also played wide receiver for Colorado State from 1989-1992, and just like McElwain, Gonzales is an offensive coordinator with rising stock.
While there will be several candidates, including current Colorado State coaches Dave Baldwin and Marty English, it will be interesting to see if the speculation increases that Gonzales head back to Fort Collins.
