The Mississippi State Bulldogs will try to get off to the second best start in program history today when they host the Central Arkansas Bears at 3 pm at the MSU Softball Stadium.
A win by Mississippi State would move the Bulldogs to 11-0, tying them with the 2008 team for the second best start in program history. A win today and a sweep against Iowa would give Mississippi State a chance to tie and surpass the 2006 squad (16-0) for the best start in program history while playing in Gulfport in the Mississippi Gulf Coast Softball Classic from February 28 to March 2.
The Bulldogs rank near the top of the SEC in every major pitching category. In fact, the Bulldogs lead the SEC in strike outs with the Mississippi State player in the circle picking up 92 strikeouts. Alison Owen, who has struck out 43 batters, leads the SEC in that category. Freshman Alexis Silkwood has also proved dominant in the circle, holding foes to a .082 batting average, which is good for third in the SEC. Silkwood also picked up SEC Freshman of the Week honors last week.
Another freshman, Caroline Seitz, has gotten off to a red-hot start in the batters' box. She leads the team in slugging percentage (.724) and total bases (21).
After completing play against Central Arkansas, the Bulldogs will play host to Iowa for a three game set starting Friday. Live audio and video of the contest against Central Arkansas will be available through HailStateTV.
