Mississippi State pitcher Alexis Silkwood wowed fans with her number of strikeouts in the 2014 season, and she started the 2015 season in the same fashion, fanning a career-best 15 batters, in Mississippi State's 8-0 win over Mississippi Valley State Thursday night in Starkville.
The Bulldogs, who improved to 27-1 all-time against Mississippi Valley State, took the lead in the bottom of the first when Caroline Seitz led of the inning with a double and scored on a Loryn Nichols single to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. That lead expanded in the second inning when Kayla Winkfield brought Amanda Ivy into score with a sacrifice fly.
With bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning, Ivy broke the game wide open with a grand slam to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead. In the sixth, Seitz smacked a home run to push the lead to 7-0, and the Bulldogs added another run to see the game called in the same inning.
Seitz led the Bulldog batters, going 2 for 4 on the night.
Silkwood only allowed one hit and one walk while striking out all but four of the batters she faced in the contest.
The Bulldogs retun to action Friday at 5:30 pm against Middle Tennessee State.
