Dan Mullen and the special teams received some much-needed good news over the eventful Super Bulldog Weekend.

Evan McPherson, the nation’s top ranked kicker in the 2018 class, committed to Dan Mullen during his visit to Starkville.

Mississippi State has experienced some frustrating play from the kicking game, so landing an elite kicker for the upcoming recruiting class is huge news for Dan Mullen and staff.

Per Paul Jones of Bulldawgs247, McPherson noted that the atmosphere surrounding Starkville and the football program sold him.

"It's just the atmosphere there and it is similar to my hometown," said McPherson. "It is close enough to home where I can go home if I need to see my family or friends. So that was a factor. Plus, my family and friends can come see me play, too, with no big travel issues. The main thing is that I just feel comfortable at Mississippi State."

Kohl’s Kicking ranks Mississippi State’s newest commitment as the best overall kicker in the nation and the 9th best punter. McPherson chose the Bulldogs over offers from Kentucky, Miami, and Nebraska, making a very nice duo with 2017 All-American punter signee Tucker Day for future years in the Maroon and White.

McPherson’s profile notes that the best kicker in the 2018 class made 27 of his 29 field goals during his junior season.

McPherson was dominant at the 2016 Southern Winter Showcase as well as the 2017 Underclassman Challenge. He has established himself currently as the best kicker in the 2018 class. His confidence in his ability to crush field goals is impressive.

While not as flashy as a commitment like Malik Heath or quarterback target Jalen Mayden, landing an elite kicker was very important for the 2018 Mississippi State recruiting class.
