Shortly after the FWtCT's Greatest Games Bracket championship kicked off last week it was already over, as the champion cruised to yet another victory in this tournament. It's easy to understand why our fans picked this game as the greatest in our history - on that fateful day MSU did the unthinkable - beating a legendary coach who hadn't lost in 28 games. It couldn't be more fitting that what you, the fans, voted as the greatest game in our history was a victory over arguably the greatest coach in the history of college football.
And the Greatest Games Bracket Champion is:
Mississippi State vs. Alabama
November 1st, 1980
Jackson, MS
6-3
How it became the champion:
Defeated 2004 MSU vs. Florida (Football) 81-7
Defeated 1996 MSU vs. Kentucky (Basketball) [QUARTERFINAL] 27-8
Defeated 1999 MSU vs. Ole Miss (Football) [SEMIFINAL] 44-13
Defeated 2004 MSU vs. Alabama (Basketball) [CHAMPIONSHIP] 42-7
Our thoughts on the winner:
I don't think any of us were surprised one bit to see this game win, as it came into the competition as a heavy favorite amongst our writers. I wasn't even alive when this game happened, yet from talking to my grandfather and father I could tell from the first time I heard of it that it was easily one of the greatest games in our school's athletics history.
Thanks to everyone who voted in our bracket contest. We hoped you enjoyed it, and we hope to do some more fan-centered posts and series of posts in the future.
Do you think the right game was named the greatest game of MSU's history in our contest? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
