Mississippi State has jumped out to one of the best starts in school history by going 13-1 through their first 14 games with the only hiccup being surprising loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a midweek game. San Diego enters the weekend under the .500 mark, but on a two-game winning streak after a sweep of then No. 8 Texas in Austin. The Bulldogs and Toreros square off in a three game set in Starkville beginning Friday.
When the teams take the diamond at 4 pm Friday, Preston Brown's first pitch will start the first ever meeting between the two programs. The Toreros come into the contest sporting a 4-6 record thanks to a slow start that saw San Diego drop three out of four games to Morehead State and two out of three games to Dallas Baptist at Fowler Park. The Toreros then followed that up with a 13-inning loss to San Diego State.
However, the team, which stood at 2-6 at that point, went to Austin and knocked of the Longhorns in a two-game double header by scores of 3-1 (in seven innings) and 6-1. The team was scheduled to play UC Riverside in a midweek game, but weather forced a cancellation of the contest.
