ESPN Statement on Mike Patrick Comments

Monday night, many Mississippi State fans took to social media over a perceived slight from ESPN's Mike Patrick. Tuesday, ESPN issued a statement about the comment.

USA TODAY Sports

In game one of the College World Series Championship Series, ESPN announcer Mike Patrick made a comment that offended some Mississippi State fans.

"The coaches told us this morning a lot of people came here from Mississippi that can't afford the trip," said Patrick. "But they came here to support their kids. They are so proud of them and everybody is waiting for this team to explode."

The quote in question came during the fourth inning of the broadcast.

On Tuesday, ESPN responded with the following:

"Mike was relaying information conveyed to him by the Mississippi State coaches celebrating the passion and dedication of its fan base. We look forward to continuing to showcase this great team to a national audience in Game 2 tonight."--From ESPN

Game 2 of the championship series will be carried on ESPN at 7 pm. Mike Patrick will lead the team of himself, Orel Hershiser and Kyle Peterson in the broadcast booth. Kaylee Hartung and Jessica Mendoza will handle reporting duties from the field.
