If you’ve been under a rock, or if this is your first time visiting For Whom the Cowbell Tolls, you might not know that the college football season is almost here. The start of the college football season is a lot like Christmas in many ways. I mean, it’s nowhere near as revered and holy and it does have a lot more yelling, violence, and alcohol, but still, there’s a lot to be excited about.
And the dawn of college football for 2016 is particularly exciting for those of us that have been waiting through an entire offseason to try and get to this moment. It hasn’t been fun covering mishaps and missteps from players and coaches, nor has it been thrilling to try and manufacture articles when there’s barely any news to cover besides basketball highlights from Italy and stupid preseason polls.
But we’re here. We made it. Here at For Whom the Cowbell Tolls, we’ve been previewing the season and providing the best offseason coverage possible. We found a way to make it through the long offseason. And now we’re a handful of days away from college football and SB Nation has released a brand new, super cool, college football magazine that is totally free.
In it, we were asked to contribute for a super cool segment and answer why the casual college football fan should root for our favorite team. Seeing as this is For Whom the Cowbell Tolls and our favorite team is Mississippi State, I got to talk about why folks should root for the Bulldogs in 2016:
Mississippi State is the perfect underdog story, and everybody loves underdogs, right? People on the outside love to belittle State and Starkville, but our team annually exceeds expectations, and our town is more charming than you’d realize.
You’ll be hard-pressed to find a fanbase that has the same blend of eccentricity and passion. Our coach is a goofball who wears Yeezys with Jimmy Buffett socks to press conferences. And we might lose our hearing early on because of our cowbells, but it’s worth it. We’re fun-loving. We’re loyal. There’s no reason you shouldn’t root for us.
Again, the start of college football is kinda like Christmas, just with more yelling, violence, and alcohol. But it’s a lot of fun. There’s plenty of excitement to go around. It’s time to celebrate people. Let’s celebrate by talking about why people should love Mississippi State in 2016. You’ve got my answer, what’s yours?
