A few short weeks ago, Chris Dobbertean wrote a primer covering the Gildan Charleston Classic, explaining the ins and outs of the event and highlighting all of the teams there.
Here’s what Chris had to say about Mississippi State and their chances in the Charleston Classic:
Mississippi State, 11th in the SEC last season, should be better in 2016-17, thanks to some strong recruiting by Ben Howland. But the Bulldogs will be tested in the bottom half by a Boise State squad that should again contend in the Mountain West and a Charleston squad that will be playing at home.
And here were his predictions for how he believed the tournament would go down:
Quarterfinals
Villanova over Western Michigan
Wake Forest over UTEP
Mississippi State over UCF
College of Charleston over Boise State
Semifinals
Villanova over Wake Forest
Mississippi State over College of Charleston
UTEP over Western Michigan
Boise State over UCF
Placement Games
7th/8th Place: Western Michigan over UCF
5th/6th Place: Boise State over UTEP
3rd/4th Place: Wake Forest over College of Charleston
Championship: Villanova over Mississippi State
And though these are simply predictions, it’s interesting to note that Mississippi State is getting some respect in the college basketball world. And this is all before Quinndary Weatherspoon decided to light the nation of Lithuania on fire by scoring 34 and 29 against their best basketball players.
With predictions like these, and Jon Rothstein taking note of all of the young talent that Mississippi State has, it’s becoming incredibly easy to get excited about this upcoming basketball season.
