Mississippi State needs one offensive coordinator

It's October. The month of Halloween. Have you put together your Joker costume yet?

Judging from the ubiquity of Heath Ledger's Joker at all Halloween parties since 2008, you've probably seen The Dark Knight. You may be completely tired of it, but you at least know what I'm talking about.

In the movie, there are two heroes: Batman (duh) and Harvey Dent. Batman does the dirty work. He's the one on the ground fighting every night to make Gotham a better place. Harvey Dent is the district attorney. His charm and charisma make him great with the media. He is a man of upstanding character who plays by the rules. He can't be bought by the mob. He's a great leader and is crucial in making Gotham a safer city. In the words of Commissioner Gordon, Dent is the man Gotham needs, but one they don't deserve.

Unfortunately, I missed the game this past week (as a note to all readers, please do not get married on a fall Saturday). After checking the score, I took to twitter and noticed that people were trashing Dan Mullen. Some even said we should fire him.

That's our problem. We are so eager to throw Dan under the bus. Truth is, we don't deserve Dan Mullen. Why do you think everyone mentions his name when a big name job comes up? Michigan, Florida, Penn State all could have had him, but we still do. What Dan has done here at Mississippi State is unprecedented. He's an insanely good football coach who develops players into legitimate NFL prospects. We need Dan Mullen.

Dan Mullen is our Harvey Dent. But we deserve a Batman.

"I can do those things, because I'm not a hero, not like Dent. I killed those people, That's what I can be." - Batman

We deserve someone who can manage the clock when we are down late in games.

We deserve someone who can make personnel decisions when certain players aren't effective in games.

We deserve someone who can call plays effectively and appropriately in games.

We deserve someone who doesn't try to sit on a lead in games.

Most importantly, we need someone to blame when these things go wrong. In The Dark Knight, Batman is willing to sacrifice his image for the sake of the legacy of Harvey Dent. He is willing to take the blame for the murders of several people. That's the thing, we need Dan Mullen - we need the White Knight - but someone has to take the fall. We need someone who can take the heat.

We need a Dark Knight.
